Andy Capp and Pigeons
« on: November 14, 2007, 09:49:45 PM »
As there isn't an Andy Capp forum, I'm posting this here. Someone today was reminding me of the old strips when Andy Capp had pigeons. It occurred to me that they haven't featured in the strip for a long while. I understand the smoking, and wife-battering being removed, but pigeon fancying? Come on! I know it sounds kinky, but what's the real reason for their being dropped?
Nostalgia is not what it used to be. 😟

I know nothing about pigeons.
There are a few areas Reg wrote about that I have simply avoided. I don't think the rent collector stands up today so I've missed that out as well. And rugby, which Andy occasionally played.
I remember seeing an old strip with Andy standing on his doorstep, selling one of his racing pigeons to a neighbour. When the guy said that it must be difficult to part with such a favourite, Andy replied " Rubbish. This is strictly business". In the last frame, Andy is in his back garden, sobbing his eyes out.
Like I mentioned some time ago, there are aspects of Reg's writing that I don't even come CLOSE to. I wish I could master that lovely bitter/sweet touch.

Maybe you could have him give up the hobby, and just show Flo taking the last one out of the oven.

Maybe you could just start off bitter and try to build on that. Baby steps, baby steps.

On the subject of Andy Capp, imagine my surprise when I saw him playing darts with Peter Griffin in Family Guy  :o

Andy has become even more of an icon in the USA over the last ten years since The Simpsons, when Homer read the paper and said "Ah... Andy, you loveable wife-beating drunk".

Family Guy is Simpsons Lite and often covers the same territory.

Even in cartoon sitcoms it's fat ugly stupid guys married to slim, capable babes.

Er... I'm not actually married to anyone at the moment.

Just a thunk about the vanishing rent collector.

When did Andy earn enough/care enough to buy his own house?
Flo could possibly have done it, but doubtful.

So, I reckon the Rent Man could be back, it's easier than inventing a new character.

For those of us in the almost solvent world, the rent collector still exists. :)

Interesting point, Max. I spoke to a friend who had a part-time job collecting rent in Dundee and he assured me that this had virtually disappeared. Having said that, it's not as if Andy Capp can be described as cutting-edge, up-to-the-minute cartoon strip!

If they have "virtually" disappeared, there must still be some left, so what's your problem?

He's more likely to get canvassers, opinion pollsters, and Jehovah's Witnesses turning up on the doorstep these days.
