My name is Roger Kettle. I write cartoons.
« on: January 20, 2008, 06:37:23 PM »
When I first started, I wrote, like, maybe one cartoon a week. This was the early seventies and cartoons were everywhere---you couldn't open a magazine without seeing dozens of them. Pretty soon, I was writing two or three a week but I could still go days without thinking of one. As time went by, my dependence increased and now I have to write three a day just to get by. My advice is don't start. Don't inject humour.

I sympathise.

My name is Tarquin, and I'm a cartoonist.

After years of travelling down a similar path to the one Roger describes, I decided enough was enough. I went cold turkey, and I can report that I've never been funny since.

The turkey still gets laughs though.
I apologise, in advance.

My name is Colin, and I'm a hanger on.
I don't get any laughs.

It's nothing to be ashamed of, Colin. Trust me - there's nothing big or glamorous about being a cartoonist. People have the wrong idea.
I apologise, in advance.

Congratulations, Peter - that's where I'm at now. But it takes time, patience and perseverance. Every day without a laugh is a victory. Every following day, a new challenge.
