Was their any damage?

Yes, was their any damage, Peter? I must say it didn't affect us here. Rothesay's built on the Highland Boundary Fault, by the way.
Damn.

But if you take "any" as a noun, it kind of makes sense.

Was their "any" damage?

Compare this to:

Was their cheese Cheddar?

Help me out here Roger.

Can't. I buggered up.

.......where's Mince when you need him?  The question is where any damage took place...answer, there.  Off now to sort out another query.  This is what happens when I haven't been on the site for a few days (for lots of reasons) and now there's so much to attend to...finishing a sentence like that will surely lure Mince from his lair

[/quote]Sounds pretty scary, Peter. When I was a tiny kid, I lived in Haiti and, I believe, we lived through several spectacular earthquakes. I remember nothing about them, other than what my mother told me. Maybe my sister, Diamond Lil, remembers more.

I remember the stories of having to make for the coast, away from the town (guess tsunamis weren't a threat) and my favourite is when our folks lived in the Dominican Republic.  Everyone ran out into the street except one American neighbour who remained standing on her dining room table trying to support a chandelier...a recent, expensive, import from the States!

Help me out here, Roger.  ::)

Actually, you are wrong here.

In commands, the subject can be understood but not stated.

For example, the command "Go away." in full means "Go you away."

So "Help me out here." in full means "Help you me out here." or "Help Roger me out here." or "Help me out here Roger."

I rest my case (on very shaky ground).

Mince is the person you were quoting. Are you saying you want me to prove myself wrong?

Have you been drinking?

Why don't we just use the little  ::) emoticon, instead of typing "Mince"? It'd save a lot of time. I wonder what  ::) would have to say, mind.

Isn't that a little patronising and childish?

Ok.
