Don't Get Done, Get Dom
« on: June 06, 2008, 09:46:05 AM »
I don't know if anyone watches this programme, but in this episode, Dom gets the price of a rug down to ?200 and then asks for ?175.

The salesman says no, and then Dom says they can toss for it: heads for ?200 and tails for ?175. The salesman thinks he is being intelligent in saying heads for ?225 and tails for ?175, but to me he is still being conned. If Dom wins, he gets the rug for ?175 and if Dom loses he just walks out without buying it. What an idiot!

I didn't see this episode, but I have seen the programme.
I'm sure you must have some subtle hidden agenda, but I'll buy it.
You say the salesman is "still being conned". When was he ever conned? All that is happening is a bargaining process and the salesman is playing Dom at his own game. Whenever Dom agrees to the salesman's terms, the previously agreed ?200 deal ceases to exist. He either gets the rug for ?175 or ?225, unless, of course, as you seem to be suggesting, he is not a man of honour.

I am not suggesting that Dom is not a man of honour, but I am saying that the fairness of the deal hinges on his honour.

It depends if he's actually entered a contract when suggesting the heads or tails scenario. If the Shopkeeper's legal team are present, (and I'm assuming they are), properly constructed papers should be made out and completed to satisfy UK law. Dom might walk out without honouring his side of the "bargain", but I would expect the full weight of the law to be brought down on him to reach a satisfactory conclusion, (it being satisfactory to the trader). I'd also expect the Shopkeeper to be awarded costs, and that any follow-up of inaccurate reporting of the event, be subject to the laws of the land relating to libel or slander.

If the shoppkeeper is getting his shop advertised on TV by only risking $25 he should be very happy.

Excellent spot, Diane. Maybe Dom could use this in his bartering. Deduct the advertising value from the price requested... Blimey, he might even end up being in pocket!

He could chip in towards Mince's TV Licence, or bail-money.

As usual Mince is using the free TV at his poor old dads house to save on the fee.
