Title: A Scots Toast
Post by: Diane CBPFC on December 09, 2008, 07:07:36 AM
My sister sent me a wall hanging called: A Scots Toast

This line has me puzzled - I thought I would run it by my Beau Peep buddies.

May your lum keep blithely reekin' (Till ye're auld enough to dee)

What's that all about then?

I'd say, as long as your fire keeps burning, there will always be smoke coming out of your chimney ;D

May there always be smoke coming out of your chimney until the day you die. In other words, may you always have warmth and comfort in your life.

Being a fan of The Broons, I knew that a 'lum' is a chimney and the rest is easily worked out!

I assumed it was a typo and a B and an L got mixed up.

I saw it as May your Bum keep lithely reekin' which puts a totally different slant on it I suppose.

Thank you - it sounded a bit rude to me and I wanted to make sure before I put it up in the hallway.

I'm having a party on Sunday - a buffet dinner. And there will be party games! The reindeer antler game with the loser having to sing a Christmas karaoke song and whiteboard pictionary.

Oooh Missus!

(I was going to add "Wouldn't it look better in the back passage?" but lost my nerve.)

Maybe Mince could step in.  ..0

Diane, this toast is more often abbreviated to "Lang may yer lum reek!" (Long may your chimney smoke), and occasionally qualified by "wi' ither fowk's coal" (with other people's coal). This qualification was said to have originated in Edinburgh. But then, as a native Glaswegian, I would say that...
