Title: Random Ramblings.
Post by: Roger Kettle on April 17, 2009, 10:02:21 PM
First of all, apologies for being so quiet recently. Apart from the usual time-consumers (three stupid comic strips to write), this is Beelzebub month---the period where self-employed people like me have to get their tax returns sorted out. Also, I've been trying to set aside time to read a book called "When You Are Engulfed By Flames". This is a splendid collection of short stories by David Sedaris and I strongly recommend it.

An old pal of mine phoned the other night and we started reminiscing about our schooldays. We both played football for the school team---Inverness Royal Academy. On the way home in the bus from matches, we used to sing "We are the I.R.A.".
Innocent times.

There is a trend among comedians today that is starting to annoy me. After they make a joke. or a humourous observation, they deem it necessary to mime or act out the punchline.
"...so he then spent the night digging the garden and looking for landmines!" This is followed by 15 tortuous, flogging-a-dead-horse seconds of miming the act of digging. I KNOW what digging looks like!

That's it. Goodnight.

I've heard of David Sedaris, but I've never read him. I will now, purely on your recommendation.

His sister is Amy Sedaris, a truly off-the-wall comedian, and someone who I think is a genius. Hopefully it runs in the family.

She wrote and appeared in a series called Strangers With Candy, a genuinely anarchic piece, and her stand-up is brilliant, but I can see very little on You Tube.

She's been on Letterman I don't know how many times, and lately on Colbert.

I hate those "mime" comedians too. It seems to be the rage, as does the pretend phone using the spread thumb and pinkie. Wankers.

Here's why Amy isn't mainstream, but I'm pleasantly surprised she got this onto a prime time womens show.

I don't think Diane needs one now. Don't all the mooses go into hibernation once the sun comes out?

Yes, they hibernate in the summer, but not before fasting for weeks beforehand to divest themselves of stored body fat.

Malc, since this is under "Random Ramblings", I loved your gag about "murdering a latte". (Apologies to everyone else---I'm talking about something from another site). I didn't have the energy to reply on there about the differences in language/expressions. It was a superb gag and, as always, beautifully drawn.

It's on the Wisenheimer which is a closed site to keep you out the riff raff.
Here it is. Thanks Roger for that affirmation, sometimes (as you know) an idea or image just hits you, so it gets drawn up before courage wanes but you get a crisis of confidence after you've drawn it.

It's funny you should mention the Wisenheimer Malc - all us non-cartoonists here on Beau Peep also have our own closed club website - we drink double lattes.

I haven't looked in on the Wisenheimer for years. I've still got the User name and password Ted Goff sent me, and it's always worked up until now (or up until then should I say).

Did you get all the Beau Peep stuff eventually, Malcolm? Must be 2 months since I sent it.

Still hasn't arrived, Peeps. I will check with the local post office tomorrow to make sure that they didn't leave us a note that blew away or something.

It was about 8 separate parcels. (Was cheaper to send individually overland.)

Bloody hell, I was expecting a box about the size of a microwave or small telly!

Yes - that would have cost about ?60 though!

Nine parcels went on 6th February.

The total postage was only ?2.98 more than if it had been UK internal second class.

The website says delivery is "from 56 days".  ..0
