Title: Some Christmas strips
Post by: Rob Baker on November 14, 2009, 08:06:24 PM
OK, on here I'll post some some classic Beau strips from Christmasses past, which may provide some inspiration for the Competition.  How we can compete with these is anyone's guess, but you never know...

From 1985:

'Mince' is mentioned quite a lot in these Christmas strips ....... ?!

The strip I liked best ends with 'now where did I put that raisin ......'  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I like the extraneous "Twiddle" in the last frame of the final strip.

I love the camel dung festive snowman centerpiece. I will award extra points for menus including centerpieces.

I think that's the only one I like. Oh, I am not comfortable looking at some of this stuff.

In the last few b&w strips, you can see how Andrew has traced back Egon quite a few times to speed up the drawing. Probably used a light box with a single Egon in place in frame and inked over it each time. Quite cleverly done because by swiftly re-inking over the template he has avoided making it look photocopied or Photoshopped.

A few more (sorry Roger!).

1996:

Despite being dated correctly, in my humble opinion I think the last 2 strips above would have been better printed the other way round (ie Saturday, before Friday).

1993:

And again, while I've got my Critic's hat on, should it not have been Beau who was speaking in the middle frame of the 2nd Strip, above?   ..0

I'm loving these Rob - wouldn't it be cool if all the Christmas strips could be made into a mini cartoon comic book card? They would sell like hot cakes.

The Vodka raffle cartoons are the wrong way round. Beau is first accusing Egon of fixing the raffle THEN asking him in the next strip who won it. For goodness sake, you have to lead some people by the hand...

Maybe in the interest of authenticity, the page setter was drinking a bottle of vodka at the time?

I remember that Roger savours a wee tincture of Gin, not Vodka, Diane.

It'd have been a bottle of Gordon's.

This series is real classic for me as it contains two of my favourite ever strips.  The second strip should win the Competition outright and the last one is just brilliantly funny (look at Egon's shame!).
Very many thanks, as always, to Roger and Andrew.
So, from 1991:
