Title: Fall DVD rental line up
Post by: Diane CBPFC on November 07, 2010, 06:29:25 PM
Any suggestions?

I thought Invictus was better than I had hoped and Gunless was a little slow and not that funny which was a shame as I really wanted to see that even when it was out in the movies.

What have you watched lately?

'Ironman 2' and 'Prince of Persia'.  Both good films.

Most of the films I see these days are afternoon TV movies and the plot is always the same. A successful Los Angeles career woman (usually called Beth) learns that her father has died and  heads back to the family ranch in Wyoming where she grew up. Evil businessmen are trying to buy the ranch and she stays on to fight them with the local hicks, one of whom is her ex-high school boyfriend. She falls in love, turns her back on L.A. and lives happily ever after.
Apart from that, Diane, I can't really help---apart from my usual recommendation of "Mr. Holland's Opus". But that's only if you're in the mood for a good cry...

That sounds like a good movie that you watch Roger - it would be perfect if it were set in Montana. They should do a Montana version.

I watched Toy Story 3 last night with the family. (Even our 16-year-old watched it with us). I must admit when they all held hands I had a good little cry. Damn you Tom Hanks.

I watched  The Hangover with my son  Josh, light comedy it's not bad, I thought I ought to watch Sky movie movie once in a while since I'm paying for  subscription.

Also watched The Proposal, a chick flick film  :D

Working my way through "Brothers & Sisters" 4th season.

Recently saw "Last Chance Harvey" with Dustin Hoffman and the sainted Emma Thompson....gentle comedy

I think my favourite series are 'Bones' and 'NCIS'. Favourite one-off films are 'The Fifth Element' and 'Independence Day'.  Favourite blubber movies, 'The Green Mile' and 'Forest Gump' (double-damn you, Tom Hanks!).

Lucy, like you, I subscribe to Sky Movies but seldom get round to watching anything. I DID see The Hangover a few weeks back and thought it was okay, with some funny moments. I honestly can't think of a recent(ish) film that I can recommend. Still, it's not long till Christmas and an excellent excuse to head for "It's A Wonderful Life".

I treated myself from Amazon!  I'm about to start disc 4 of 6 and will happily lend it to you when I've finished...I would normally say "give" it to you but I've a friend who recently discovered the show and I know will want to see the 4th season eventually!

I like Brothers and Sisters too - and Bones.  I'm an avid Kathy Reichs fan and have read all the books. She just amazes me the way she wrote all those books and did all her other stuff at the same time. Been to a talk by her and met her briefly when she signed my book.  Fascinating lady.

My favourite blubber movies are Beaches (oh yes) and Dr Zhivago - even go so far as to say that Dr Z is my favourite movie.  One recent fave is It's Complicated with Meryl Streep - you would probably like that, Diane. Elaine and I went to see it in the middle of my chemo.  Did  me the world of good, I laughed so much.  We missed a lot of it because we were talking and laughing about the funny bits.  Luckily, there were only a couple of other people in the cinema at the time. In the same vein but with Diane Keaton, Something's Gotta Give is another good one.  Mad Money is funny too.  My sister bought me Mamma Mia when she was here because I hadn't seen it.  Haven't had a chance yet.  Also got the complete series of A History of Scotland for my birthday, still to watch.

Must look out for Last Chance Harvey, Lil, didn't see it at the movies - love Dustin Hoffman.  Also haven't seen Iron Man and Iron Man 2 - they would do for son's Christmas!

"Stand By Me" was on the other night and I ended up watching it again. Great film.

Over the last couple of weeks I downloaded and watched The Expendables, Robin Hood and Red.
I'd say I preferred Red out of all of them, great fun movie.

For the "tear doon fa" stuff it would be most of those mentioned, Stand by Me, Green Mile stand out (can't stick a Wonderful Life, when that wee girlie says..every time a bell rings an angel gets it's wings.... I could puke.

One Australian film I loved (and cried at) was Mary and Max it's an animated movie just released now in the UK I think.

I ordered two Sandra Bullock movies through inter-library loan "The Proposal" I am still waiting for but have in to watch this weekend, "The Blind Side".

I am also re-waching Big Bang Season three after just getting it back from being lent out.

Gotta love Sheldon! How are the pups going, Diane?

The pups are good - I am having a problem selling them this year - only one out of the 4 is sold and I've ads in the two major papers for a month.  It is a worry.

:( That's no good.  Shame you're in Canada - if you were here I would be very tempted. We've decided not to get another dog at the moment though, for a number of reasons. The other half only likes "big" dogs anyway, unfortunately.

I watched a film the other night called Paranormal Activity and it scared the bejasus out of me. I recommend viewing it in company.

Aha! It's cable TV so it's on again tonight on TCM2 at 10:35PM.

As usual (trust me this is true) whenever I download a movie for someone or on their recommendation it will appear on TV within the week.

I downloaded the Mr Holland movie on Friday.  :-[
