Title: A Fun Game!
Post by: Roger Kettle on May 23, 2007, 10:41:55 PM
I thought it would be fun if we all voted on our favourite branch of the Sioux tribe. We've got the Unkpapa, the Sans Arc, the Minniconjou, the Oglala, the Brule, the Assiniboin, the Two-Kettle (don't let this influence you!), the Blackfeet, the Hidatsa, the Mandan, the Osage, the Quapaw and the Ponca.
I'm going Oglala.

I'm going Oglala as well, if only for Crazy Horse. Just read this account of his death:

Dr. McGillycuddy, who treated Crazy Horse after he was stabbed, wrote that Crazy Horse "died about midnight." According to military records he died before midnight, making it September 5, 1877. According to the Oglala Sioux, he died after midnight, making it September 6, 1877. The monument located at the spot of his death says September 5, 1877. Each year the Oglala Sioux meet at the spot of his death on September 6.

And then there's "Young Man Afraid Of His Horses" . . .

It's too late for me to start doing anagrams...

I'm going with the Two-Kettles - I like to back people who are prepared for many visitors.

The Ponca are an interesting tribe. Most others decided to embrace casino management, but the Ponca went into manufacturing indicators for automobiles.

They're now called the Ponca-ponca-ponca-ponca.

Indian names were often translated literally--or badly--and their true meanings were contorted. Mince mentioned "Young Man Afraid Of His Horses" which sounds  ridiculous to us. In fact, it was a huge compliment and meant that he was such a great warrior that his enemies were even afraid of his horses.
God, I'm boring.
