The picnic table
Steve, our 17-year-old, has been taking woodworking at school. Yesterday he built me a picnic table! It looks lovely and is solid like a rock. It is made out of spruce and will be stained.
He drew up his own plans for it, so it is perfect for 6’7” 200lb football/basketball players such as himself. I sat on it feeling like a six-year-old; legs straining to reach the floor and elbows lifted to reach the table.
I shall have to ask him to make a “kids” table next – for us regular folk.
I grew up with me Dad who tended to bung things together, it is so impressive to me to see a young man draw up technical plans and make a shopping list and doing a great practical job too.
Signed,
Diane a pretty proud momma :)

That's such a great story, Diane. I would be very proud too. You know you'll be okay in later life if you require any surgical, or mobility appliances designing.

...or a smart wooden coffin on the cheap.

Good Lord! He's out there right now building another one!
Maybe he's going to invite the whole football team out for a BBQ. ;D Actually that would be a cool idea eh.

It reminds me of a time when I was living in the midlands. A neighbour was doing some carpentry in the back garden, and so I made conversation with him over the fence.
I asked after his wife, knowing she'd been unwell. He said she was still in bed suffering from a bout of the 'flu.
Hearing sounds from his house, I asked, "Is that her coughin'?"
"No", he replied, "It's a rabbit-hutch".

It's not the cough that carries you off.
It's the coffin they carry you off in!

Who's paying for the food and drink at this team BBQ?

Leslie Sarony! A great comedy-songwriter and one of my heroes:

Following the rather morbid theme of the Cough Drop Song, this one is more famous and, I think, one of his better ones...

Wow, Rob. That was a song by grandfather used to play on his old 78 rpm record player, (with wind-up handle).
When I see the technology today - wi-fi, digital imaging, cloud computing, colour tvs on trains and sides of buildings, it really dawns on me how life has changed and advanced in the (relatively) short time I've been on the planet.

My Mum used to say things like that, Peeps, but she was talking about 80 to 90 years of mainly the last century. You're right - it's amazing how far we've come in terms of technological advances in the last 20 years or so. Very short time.
Diane, you should be an extremely proud Mum. Steven planned, started and finished his project. Most of the projects my son started (at home) are lying around still in pieces. They're all electrical things, either being built or supposed to be fixed. :D

Rob, amazing. Thank you :). I did not know where the quote came from, only knew it was old. How do you manage to find these gems? Keep it up.
