Title: Last of the Summer Wasps.
Post by: Roger Kettle on September 19, 2011, 09:50:40 PM
I'm pretty sure that I've mentioned on here before that I'm not keen on wasps. It's not that I'm SCARED of them, it's just that, okay, I'm scared of them. At this time of year, they're all pissed on decaying fruit and go around picking fights like bar room drunks. I've been stung three or four times over the years and it's bloody sore. Unlike bees, who mostly die after stinging someone, wasps are cocky with it and keep coming back for more. They are the insect world's answer to game show hosts.

You must stop wearing your yellow and black stripy jumper in September Roger - you are egging them on.

Wasps are evil.  Bees are honourable.

I trod on a bee on my front lawn once. It resulted in a painful sting. Walking on a lawn bare-footed isn't a good idea, even at the height of Summer.

I remember drowning wasps as a kid. You just filled an empty jam, or honey jar with water and stuck it outside in the sun. (The jars had to still have jam or honey stuck to the sides.) If the wasps didn't fall in, you could give the jar a shake to wash them in.

There you go, Diane. That can be your next project after the Harry Potter scarf: a neutral jumper for Roger!

I hate them, detest them, abhor them,  if I were the ultimate quadrillionaire I'd pay a quid  for each dead one I was presented with.

Read a piece in the Daily Mail last week which stated that if you read this article you wouldn't kill another wasp, it went on to extol the wasp and especially it's queens.

WRONG, I haven't ever been stung, but they scare the crap outta me, tough when your hobby is fishing.

Killing blackfly and greenfly don't spare them the death penalty, make some honey, grow fleece, be edible and I'd perhaps share the planet.

One of the best books I've ever read was "The Wasp Factory",  mainly because it had some great ideas about their disposal, the rest of the book was pretty OK too, certainly didn't do Iain Banks any harm.

Wasps were once described as the skinheads of the insect nation, correctly I believe.  :-[
