This is great stuff, Nige, and fascinating for those of us who grew up with Andy Capp and the genius of Reg Smythe.
On a personal note, the claim that I gave up the writing of Andy Capp after ten years because I was "on the verge of a nervous breakdown" is a slight exaggeration. I gave it up in order to have some kind of life away from cartoons. Then again...

It's okay - I've told everybody that going a bit loony was a coincidence.

There you go using that word "loony" again. You said that when we got married in Manila last month.
