I have asked my students to post regularly on my student messageboard over the next eight weeks, so that I can check their punctuation, spelling and grammar. (I do this for free over the summer.) I let them chat about anything they want. If any of you are so bored that you would like to annoy and wind up some truly delightful students (aged 13 to 16), I could do with some help. All you need to do is post whenever you want about whatever you want - a bit like you do here. You even get an animated avatar.
-
Sign me up - I've got two good topics right off the bat.

Can I pretend to be a 14 year old girl called Amber, like last time?
I sooo-ooo picked up the lingo.

I think you may be confusing message boards with somewhere else, Malc.
As for the suggestion, Mince, I have never been so insulated in all my days, but so long as you don't even think about correcting my literature, I guess there's no harm in it...unless Malc does do his juvenile drag act.
-
Tarquin, I actually asked everyone here because their English is good.
I don't check the English of the adults - I have enough work to do with the students.
I believe that so far I have Dianne and Tarquin, which is great.
No, Malc, you can't masquerade as a 14-year-old girl. I would like your style of humour on my student board, however.
No one on the student board, including the adults, is allowed to give out personal information (for obvious reasons) except for me (and my name on the board is Malcolm). So you all need to choose a nickname. At the moment, the only other adult on the board (besides me) is a female friend from America who calls herself Feather.
There will also be a debate section for anyone who enjoys that kind of thing, though if you post in that forum you must do so to further the debate. (Humour, sarcasm and irony that does further the argument is allowed.) In Chat, however, anything goes.

Please remember that there is no commitment here. You just post when you enjoy doing so.
-
Er...should we know where to find this forum yet, or are you just building up the tension for now? I don't know about Diane, but I'm a coiled spring here.
-
I have to register you on the board (since it's a private board). You can't register yourself. So you need to choose an avatar first.
Coiled spring indeed!
-
Can I have this one?
-
Yes, of course.
Now choose a username.
-
By the way, my friend and I love the avatar. Where did you get it?
-
I got it from http://www.animatedavatars.org/index.php (http://www.animatedavatars.org/index.php) .
There are some well dodgy avatars there, so if you're at all prudish or of a nervous disposition, you have been warned (that should guarantee a stampede to the site). It was the first site that Google offered me after I searched for 'animated avatar' - there appears to be many more.
Username: Rufus
-
Tarquin, I have sent an email to you. Tell me if you don't receive it.
-
Shall I tell you if I do receive it?
'Cos I did.
I await your instruction.
-
(just practising)
-
Okay, get on the board and annoy some students. All I want you to do is give them something (or someone) to chat about.
-

I found this cute little fellow for my avatar.
If you think that they will be nice to old people, then I would like to be known as Old Lady Di - and if they should decide to just use the first letters that would be OLD.
Or if you think I would stand a better chance aiming at hip and cool then you can call me Disco Di
-
Rufus of course is latin for ginger nuts.
Can I choose M26 for my avatar? My user name will be Alex (my middle name, seeing as my first name is taken).
-
M26 and Alex? Still going for that 14-year-old girl thing I see, Malc.
-
Dianne, why not call yourself Lady Di? Also, I would prefer that you have an animated avatar to show that you are an adult.
-
Alex and M26 are fine. I'll set you up now and send you an email.
-
Noooooo. I do not want to be Lady Di - as in Lady Di - my 'lady' was more a part of old lady than after the princess.
Call me Disco Di then and find me a spinning ball.
I could only see the first two of your avatar offerings in this thread - then I just see numbers.
-
Okay. Give me ten minutes.
Malc, I have sent you an email.
-
I'll have this
(http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r10/tomovuk/36.gif)
and the user name shrek.
-
Suggestion for Diane....?

-
I think I'll probably stay out of this----the last thing I need at the moment is another excuse to avoid work. Then you guys will be having lots of fun and I'll miss out and I'll get jealous and NO! I'M NOT JOINING!
Not yet anyway...
-
Wow! I leave this board to go out for a day's work and return to a plethora of posts :o
I really wanted M26 too but will settle for M24 and name me Dizzy..nicely anonymous and relevant to the avatar. OK?
-
I am tutoring students at the moment, but will sort everyone out at 9pm.
-
I will be M36 and Waylander
-
You can start posting on the Student Board whenever you wish. My two aims is to make them post (about anything) so that I can check their English (so please start any topic that might get them chatting), and to make them write something interesting or - dare I hope - ironic, satirical, or just plain funny.
-
"My two aims IS?"
-
He could argue that "two" is a collective term, and therefore singular...
-
Well done, Roger. You've passed the test. You may now post on the student board.
(Did he believe it?)
-
He could argue that "two" is a collective term, and therefore singular...
No, he couldn't.
-
I can't make mistakes on the Student Board. I have an aura of genius to maintain there. Here I can let my hair down every now and then.
-

"I wish he'd fall OF . . ."?
-
This could get nasty.
-
I found a Beau strip with a spelling mistake in it once, but I can't remember which one now. Mince must have been saving that one up!
-
ALL spelling mistakes are down to Andrew. Every script is word-perfect when it leaves me but, from time to time, Andrew will make an error when lettering the finished strip.
-
Yes, Roger, of course. We all believe you.
-
Mince has no idea about proof readers in the print trade
-
I'd like to introduce you folks to one of the cleverest and funniest poyems ever written. Those what don't already know of it, that is.
Printer's Error
As o'er my latest book I pored,
Enjoying it immensely
I suddenly exclaimed 'Good Lord!'
And gripped the volume tensely.
'Golly!' I cried. I writhed in pain 'They've done it on me once again!'
And furrows creased my brow.
I'd written (which I thought quite good)
'Ruth, ripening into womanhood,
Was now a girl who knocked men flat
And frequently got whistled at',
And some vile, careless, casual gook
Had spoiled the best thing in the book
By printing 'not' (Yes 'not'. great Scott!)
Where I had written 'now'.
On murder in the first degree
The Law, I know, is rigid:
Its attitude, if A kills B,
To A is always frigid.
It counts it not a trivial slip
If on behalf of authorship
You liquidate compositors
This kind of conduct it abhors
And seldom will allow.
Nevertheless, I deemed it best
And in the public interest
To buy a gun, to oil it well,
Inserting what is called a shell,
And go and pot
With sudden shot
This printer who had printed 'not'
When I had written 'now'.
I tracked the bounder to his den
Through private information:
I said 'Good afternoon' and then
Explained the situation:
'I'm not a fussy man,' I said
'I smiled when you put "rid" for "red"
And "bad" for "bed" and "hoad" for "head"
And "bolge" instead of "bough".
When "wone" appears instead of "wine"
Or if you alter "Cohn" to "Schine",
I never made a row.
I know how easy errors are.
But this time you have gone too far
By printing "not" when you knew what
I really wrote was "now".
'Prepare,' I said, 'to meet your God
Or,as you'd say your Goo or Bod
Or possibly your Gow.'
A few weeks later into court
I came to stand my trial.
The judge was quite a decent sort,
He said 'Well cocky, I'll
Be passing sentence in a jiff,
And so, my poor unhappy stiff,
If you have anyhing to say
Now is the moment.
Fire away.
You have?'
I said 'And how!
Me lud, the facts I don't dispute.
I did, I own it freely, shoot
This printer through the collar stud.
What else could I have done, me lud?
He'd printed "not"...'
The judge said 'What!
When you had written "now"?
God bless my soul!
Gadzooks!' said he.
'The blighters once did that to me.
A dirty trick, I trow
I hereby quash and override
The jury's verdict. Gosh!' he cried.
'Give me your hand.
Yes I insist, You splendid fellow!
Case dismissed.'
(Cheers, and a Voice 'Wow-wow!')
A statue stands against the sky,
Lifelike and rather pretty.
'Twas recently erected by
The PEN committee.
And many a passer-by is stirred,
For on the plinth, if that's the word,
In golden letters you may read
'This is the man who did the deed.
His hand set to the plough,
He did not sheathe the sword, but got
A gun at great expense and shot
The human blot who'd printed "not"
When he had written "now".
He acted with no thought of self,
Not for advancement, not for pelf,
But just because it made him hot
To think the man had printed "not"
When he had written "now".'

Absolutely wonderful.
-
Here, here!
I almost lost my coffee at
"'Prepare,' I said, 'to meet your God
Or,as you'd say your Goo or Bod
Or possibly your Gow.' "
-
Absolutely wonderful.
Yes, ton-derful!
See what I did there?
-
Great prose, just what mince is looking for.
