Title: The Queens Baton...
Post by: Sandy Buttcheeks on July 21, 2014, 07:51:55 PM
...came to my work today. As did ...

6 motorcycle police (skilfully showing how slowly they could nearly hit crowd types).
7 walkie type police (looking happy to be away from nasty, dangerous criminal types).
1 police van (presumably for walkie type police).
1 official baton minibus (with a smashed back window covered by cling film stuff)
1 single decker with blacked out windows (to allow commonwealth debauchery I suspect)
Infinite numbers of baton entourage (who clapped excitedly in case we didn't. We didn't).
Countless photographers (yet none seemed interested in the baton).
3 bagpipers (very good they were. They even played several times cos the baton false started).
Clyde the Commonwealth mascot (some poor sod in a thistle suit getting his photo taken with all).

Oh aye, and a wee wummin carrying a giant e-cigarette, jogging very slowly.

Cost of the above 40min start-to-finish slot?...forever to remain unknown.

Cost of the smiles of the kids in the cancer ward from getting fussed over and photo opportunities with Clyde and the wee wummin with THE baton?...priceless !!

You didn't think I was going to slag them all off, did you?

 :)

How did the Queen herself manage without her baton?

I hated the whole Commonwealth opening ceremony. The start, which I only heard from upstairs, even SOUNDED rubbish.

Hate to be negative about something I wanted to be so good, but it seemed like someone had resurrected the director and choreographer of the White Heather Club, given them a shortbread tin as a design template and said "go for it".
Yes, I understand that there has to be a bit of that - people expect tartan and bagpipes, but it was all so bloody OLD and fusty.

It was awful. Jaw-droppingly awful.

I'm with Roger on this. You think they'd have included just ONE of the Beau Peep the Musical songs.

The homage to Beau Peep was in the judo. I'm sure I saw Egon and Sopwith competing. The male competitors were almost as bad.    :o

I read this in the Herald yesterday. The ceremony was meant to be kitsch and a parody.

Incidentally, there appears to be an apostrophe missing from the title of this thread. If anyone finds it, please hand it in.

I think it's a bit rich saying "yes, it was awful, but it was MEANT to be" and even more rich adding "the plebs just didn't get it". The fact is it didn't come across as "camp", just bad. Maybe "kitsch" is Gaelic for "shite".

"Mr Zolkwer said the tone was entirely intentional, a "kitsch, camp, piss-take" of what a serious opening ceremony should be".

Yep, I bet that was in the job description. "Wanted: Artistic Director to mount kitsch piss-take of serious opening ceremony."

I thought it was cheap, tawdry. insular, cringeworthy, badly-performed, void of imagination and cliche-ridden crap.
Now I feel such a fool! It was a satirical masterpiece!

I didn't really bugger up the "quote" system above. It was..ahem..satire.
