"Stand By Me" is one of my favourite songs. I was trawling around youtube and found a version under the title "straight no chaser sings stand by me". Once again, I apologise for not having the know-how to provide a link but, if like me, you love this song, take a look. I'm not saying it's brilliant but definitely worth a peek...

I never heard it before John Lennon did it, isn't that weird?
-
Much as I liked the Lennon version, it lacked the great bass of the original---and that makes the song for me.
-
The original was sung by a large fish?
-
Ben E. Kingfish, to be exact.
-
Benny the Kingfisher sang Stand By Me?

You wrote Stand for Benny the Kingfisher, Peepsie?

Benny the Kingfisher's a standby for me.

I saw Ben E King with the Drifters play Ayr in about 1977/78.
They were billed as The Drifters With Ben E King, I'm sure. I know he played with them early in their careers but I'm assuming they got together later.
At one time it seemed there were two or three bands called The Drifters touring.
