Thank you, gents----not that the success of Andy has anything to do with me. Reg Smythe was a true great, creating a wonderful character that achieved worldwide appeal---something that few cartoonists have ever done. What is often overlooked, because of the "sexist" attitude of the early strips, is that Reg was an absolutely brilliant artist. There have been very few better.

Roger, I'm not sucking up but I often quote yours and Roger's assumption of the Andy Capp mantle as possibly the only case of new creators achieving the standard of the original. That's how rare the success rate is. I don't know of any others in the UK (the Perishers?) but in the US I haven't seen any replacement authors/artists who have recreated the magic or appeal of the originators (even if the new guys are the sons of the old).

Many thanks, Malc. A very pleasant way to start a Sunday of writing....Andy Capp strips!

(even if the new guys are the sons of the old).
I would have thought especially in that instance, Malc. Genetics is surely one of the last criterion upon which you can transfer a great sense of humour?
And I agree with all of the above.

Here's the story on the Miror website, unfortunately without the cartoon examples.
