Title: Something that's been driving me crazy...
Post by: Roger Kettle on January 27, 2016, 10:27:38 PM
When I'm trying to get to sleep at night, I tend to play around with words in my head. Sometimes, I'll try to make up cryptic crossword clues. A few nights ago, the word "break" came into my mind and I came up with the satisfactory clue "holiday snap". I was happy with that and drifted off to sleep. The other night, the word "by" popped into my head. Let's take the sentence "A famous song by The Beatles". Give me a synonym or substitute  for "by". I certainly couldn't think of one. Even allowing myself TWO words---"performed by"...."done by"---still includes the word I want to replace.
Yes, I know I have problems.

I was being comprehensive, diverse and all-embracing. These things take time.

I almost certainly typed "from" before you did.  :\

The times on the posts don't lie. I bet St Johnstone are comprehensive, diverse, and all-embracing as well.

I'm not falling for this new facade you're attempting to convey - namely that of this forum's Scottish football expert. When you can satisfactorily explain the offside rule in an Aberdonian accent, I may start to take it more seriously (he lied).

I should stress that the timings of the posts in question are a mere 64 seconds apart, and that the extensive research and typing that went into my own post, after I'd typed the word "from" was...well, it was extensive. And considerably longer than 64 seconds.

I love how you rationalise your clearly coming second as a victory nonetheless on your part. You should climb Everest diversely as well and claim to be the first.

Never thought of "from". Slightly different but it'll do. I'll sleep tonight.

No, from won't work: it could suggest the Beatles are the record company. I'm afraid you'll be back to sleepless nights.

On the plus side, Roger, you could always spend the time worrying about something less important.

No, wait...  ..0

When I'm trying to get to sleep at night, I tend to play around with words in my head.

Me too, Roger. Usually "stop" and "snoring"...though I do often slip a well deserved expletive in.
