Title: Children's Education
Post by: Mince on August 12, 2016, 01:03:09 PM
If a child could choose four of the following eight things to learn in school (but not the other four), which would you hope they would choose?

1. Trigonometry;

2. How to argue your point: analogies, facts, fallacies;

3. How to understand statistics, scientific studies, the placebo effect, etc to make informed choices about their health and lives;

4. History of the Second World War (substitute any other study of history);

5. Understanding the psychology of con artists, psychological and emotional blackmail, confidence and self esteem, etc;

6. Self-defence and survival techniques;

7. Geography, how beaches and coasts are formed, tides, erosion (substitute any other study of geography);

8. Poetry.

4.......Nah! Tried to drop it at school and was told the alternative was Greek!

In school I would pick 1, 4, 8, 7

I would expect to (and did) drive my kids into town for evening karate lessons.

I guess poetry is essential in life-and-death situations.

In Glasgow,poetry can ne'er be fun
But aye keep it in yer heid,
Cos there's aye some bugger wae a gun,
Wha might just shoot ye deid.

So the only way to gan and flee
And keep yer heid wae bonnet
Is try and muster up some glee
And hit them wae a sonnet.

I thank you.
