The cartoon below has been drawn for some time and I have held back from sending it, because I changed my mind about the original punchline and could never find a better one.
However, I like this idea and I wondered what you guys thought?

It works for me.

I think the smiley should have its tongue sticking out.
-
I think Peepsie's suggestion would help, but I laughed anyway, Malc.
-
I'm not sure that, given their diet, Red Indians would be fat anyway.
Maybe Diane can advise, seeing as she's from that part of the world.
-
Diane's from Red India?
-
Fat Indians are from Gerrit India.

Sadly most Native Americans are overweight and suffer a higher rate of diabetes and high blood pressure than the population average.
Like most marginalized people, many suffer from drug and alcohol abuse; a generation of now grandparents is still recovering from the forced separation from their native lifestyles and the protection of their parents by compulsory residential schools run by church bodies. Native languages were not allowed to be spoken in these schools, and there was widespread physical and sexual abuse.
Now the trickle down effect continues with Grandparents often raising their grandchildren as many younger people give way to addiction. Many native children suffer from fetal alcohol and other gestational abuse. The children are often sent off the reservations to find foster homes but they ?belong to the tribe? and are never given up to be adopted into permanent non-native homes as the tribe is paid by the federal government per head. Many children get a lump sum at age 18 of around 100K and free university etc but sadly it is often pilfered away by the extended family until the next relative turns 18.
A few native people end up leaving the reserve and living as other Canadians do; sadly many end up lost and addicted in the large cities. Amnesty International had figures that the rape and murder of native women was at something like six times higher than the population in general.
As an outsider ? coming as I do from the UK - I just don't understand the system at all - Pierre Trudeau tried to do away with reserve living a generation ago but was defeated by the natives themselves. If these were black people and this was America or South Africa there would be outrage - but here it is just not talked about much at all.
Canada has quite a history of racism but is doing pretty good now for all people exept the natives.

PS - I like the gag and the artwork :-)
-
That ol' forked tongue has a lot to answer for.
Thanks, Diane.
-
Many thanks for such an in depth report. I was unaware of the Indian situation in Canada.
-
Malc, the gag works well and is, as always, beautifully drawn.
Diane, things are not any better South of the border in Montana. I've been through both the Crow reservation and the Cheyenne reservation and they are not happy places. I've also been in a bar which had a grill-window---it was used to sell "brown-bag" liquor to the local Indians who weren't allowed inside. Thankfully, there are many people there working hard to change the situation but it's a long, long process.

I was expecting a Yes or No, Diane.

Sorry Peeps - I forget the question.

That's okay, Diane. I forget the whole thread. It's our age I expect.

Diane,
Ditto your report for the Australian Aboriginal population. Native peoples around the world seem to be having the same experiences, and "white" governments seem to be suffering the same failures.
