Has anyone noticed that some people called Jim aren't really called Jim at all. More often than not it transpires that their actual name is James!
I doubt very much whether James I (a king), was ever called "Jim".
-
James T didn't seem to mind being called Jim.
-
I just realised how few people called John I've known (personally). I mean, it's quite a common name, isn't it? I had a school friend called John Cole, when I was at Junior School, and his name was John, but apart from that I can't think of anyone off the top of my head, (other than another John from Art College who I didn't know all that well).

James Theakston was Jamie actually.
-
Ha Ha. Very funny. James T KIRK........
-
I feel that Peepmaster is going to present us with his "Jim" poem if we aren't more careful with our responses in this thead.
-
What a great memory you have, Diane!
-
I suspect "John" got less popular when it became the word used to describe the paying companion of a lady of ill repute, kind of ironic given that DDC is a John [in the name sense rather than a customer sense].
-
What a great memory you have, Diane!
That's because I take these herbal memory pills - well I would do if I could find them.
-
They're in your knicker drawer with the squashed tube of Rectinol that you haven't used since your last pregnancy.
Oh, hang on, that's my missus...

I knew a kid whose family name was Gurney ...he was christened Ernest...grew up as Ernie Gurney and later changed his name to Jim.... I thought that was bad but then saw signs for an estate agent in Bridgenorth..... His name is Nicholas Tart...(brave man to keep that name eh?)
-

I lived very near Bridgnorth. One of the loveliest towns in England. I remember Nick Tart's Estate Agents. (http://www.nicktart.com/) There's also an Estate Agent called Dolittle & Dalley. (http://www.doolittle-dalley.co.uk/)

Ah, Jim (and various versions thereof) - a common name in our family: father, both grandfathers, uncle (the said Jas Campbell, Malc), father's cousin, our cousins (two), cousin's son. Needless to say, they're aren't any in the next generation. My first boyfriend was a Jim. My son is John, DDC - was always a bit worried about the American association with the loo rather than the one you mentioned.
-
My first boyfriend was a Jim.
I think we're generally more tolerant these days, Joan.
We were having a discussion on one of the Cartoonists' Forums earlier about Andy Capp (which, of course, Roger writes). It occurred to me that the main character in the cartoon strip wouldn't have the same image if he was called Andrew.

Well, of course, he was James when I WASN'T HAPPY WITH HIM.
-
... and I just realised, I think I missed the joke there.
-
When you weren't happy with HIM, or you weren't happy with JIM?
-
I was always happy with Jim. It was James I wasn't happy with.
-
Yes, I have a 'Jamie' who is reverted to 'JAMES!' in times of stress.
I didn't want his name shortened to Jim and I managed this all through his childhood - now he's a six-foot, eighteen-stone 'Jay'.

And you let him? :o
