Tarks, what's a native of Perth called? (I realise that this could be construed as the build-up to a joke---it's not!)
-
B*ggered if I know, Roger - I'm a Glaswegian.

A Perthian???
-
Is it a Peruvian? I've heard that term used somewhere.

It is actually a completely baffling question, Roger. I lived there for forty years and I don't know the answer. I can't even recall ever wondering about it, or being in a conversation where the topic came up. Weird!
I quite like Perts though.
I did try to research the answer on the web, but have come up with nowt so far. However, I was delighted to find a photograph on Wikipedia's Perth (Scotland) page of my childhood home, where I grew up from the age of 4 to 21. It's the first door on the left of the picture, and my bedroom was behind the window top left (below the roof).
It was a fabulous place to grow up, looking out onto a huge park (that's the entrance at the forefront of the picture) that had everything a kid could ever want, including a huge domed sports centre, sports pitches of every description, and a golf course. At the far end flows a beautiful stretch of the River Tay.
Needless to say, I took most of it for granted as a kid, but I've lived in enough places since those days to realise just how lucky I was.

Bet you wish you'd never asked now, Roger - was there a particular reason?

Natives of Perth, Western Australia are called Perthians.
Perth in Oz was named after Perth in Scotland, so I think Perthians applies to both?

Tarks, it was something my wife asked me. I think it may have come up at her work---she's with Visit Scotland (the new name for the Tourist Board) and was in Perth yesterday.
-
Oh, and thanks, Malc---you're probably right.
-
Nah - I can only just accept that the Aussies allow the capital of Western Australia to be named after a small (but beautifully formed) Scottish city. That they couldn't, or more to the point, wouldn't come up with their own name for the natives is beyond belief.
And in my 40 years as a resident of Perth, I'd never heard the term used, so I reckon the Aussies coined it. Perthite rings a bell though.

Individually, I think the term may be a perthon... :-[

;D ;D ;D

I think the Scottish Parliament should establish a mint there. Because you keep your money in a Perth.
