I got a bit interested in the world cup after seeing the Norwegian team photo AND Lays crisps came out with official marketing for our Canadian team.
I am only cheering flags at this point seeing I know nothing. My teams are Canada; Scotland and Norway.
I think things turned out better than expected with all the politics

As I'm sure you know, I'm a huge football fan but the timing of the games is going to make it difficult for me to watch. For example, Scotland's first match against Haiti kicks off at 2 a.m. our time. I may need several gallons of coffee.

My plan is to get comfortable on the couch in front of the TV at 11 p.m. and see what happens. My guess is I'll be asleep by five past.

Herein lies my dilemma. I have longed for Scotland to qualify for another world cup since Hadda scored Morocco's second at France '98. However, I'm working on Sunday morning. And a 2am kick off means a 4am finish. And there's a real possibility of falling asleep in the pulpit with that kind of bed time.
Add in the possibility of a draw or a Haiti victory, and it's probably best I just give it a miss this time...
If Scotland go out, I'll turn my attentions to France, since a chunk of my family would qualify for service in the Legion. Given my son's Ronaldo obsession and my supermarket loyalty card sweepstake result, I'll also be keeping an eye out for Portugal's results.

I am really enjoying this 10-12 minute game re-caps - perfect for my interest level and it gives you an idea of who to cheer for. I am now cheering for South Korea and USA too. I will probably want to watch whole games when it gets closer to the finals so will have to sort out some streaming channel to view them on.

Todays last minute Qatar goal made my day - their poor goalie was on top form triple duty as the Swizz were like energizer bunnies trying relentlessly at goal.
My daughter, who actually coaches soccer, won't watch because of Trump's peace medal. Thus I'm here talking to you guys instead.

These re-cap games are really holding my interest this year, I watched all 8 games over the weekend.

At last! A claim to fame! I actually have been to Curacao, er the airport actually for nearly an hour.
Back in 1996 we had a holiday on Margarita island Venezuela, and landed there before the hop to Caracas.
It was a wee place, no doubt lovely if you got to explore it.
Downside was the 22 hours to fly home.

It's a perenniel bugbear that as an organisation, FIFA is as bent as a three-bob note (I don't know why I use this expression, I was born comfortably after decimalisation) - and you know that they are carving out a substantial chunk of the world cup profits for their own slimy purposes.
I once read a fantastic piece of investigative journalism on the subject - 'Foul!: The Secret World of FIFA: Bribes, Vote Rigging and Ticket Scandals,' by Andrew Jennings. It's obviously a little out of date now, but I haven't seen anything that would make me believe they have reformed themselves in the intervening years.
My own world cup bugbear is seeing so many 'famous' people at the tournament; politicians, low-level musicians, reality TV participants etc. Because you know none of them have endured a freezing Hampden evening watching us struggle against Leichtenstein. It feels a shame for those who have walked through the valley not to have an opportunity to enjoy the mountaintop, because the right honourable member for Gravy Train, East has swiped their ticket.
I also had a rant the other day seeing Rylan Clark on a panel of faces of pundits and presenters on the BBC website. I spent a good couple of minutes deriding the lazy 'jobs for the BBC favourites' approach, and the inanity of having someone give us their allegedly hilarious, 'I don't know anything about football' slant on one of the world's biggest sporting events.
Turns out it was Olivier Giroud....

I am loving watching the pure joy of Scotland and the Netherlands fans as they take over cities - they have paid for flights and hotels and are making the most of every moment. It has been so lovely to see marches of JOY after so many dark years.

I bought myself a soccer ball. There were a few around the garden that were wrecked beyond repair left years ago by the kids.
Hubby - Did you buy that to play with the nephews and nieces?
That was a lovely thought, but I only thought of myself actually LOL I mostly plan to do a little dribbling, maybe between things, if any of my adult kids show up to be goalies I could set up a goal.

My four year-old granddaughter favours her left foot while kicking a ball around the garden. She also enjoys sliding in any mud that's available. A sort of messy Messi, if you like.

You see so many players sliding for quite a distance on their knees. This made me look up if they are playing on real grass or AstroTurf. The grass is holding up great seeing the use it is getting.
My life would make more sense if I had grandchildren, glad that you are enjoying yours Roger.

I bought a month of TSN so now I can watch whole games and all the pre and post stuff. Watched Canada VS Switzerland this afternoon. It was like there wasn't a minute of down time, seemed like more fouls that decent line ups for goals - the voice over guys spoiled it for me predicting Canada's loss early on and constantly like depressing budgerigars.
There is no way I can watch 4 full time games per day so will still be watching re-caps. Hard to know which of the full games to watch in real time with so many choices.

I have decided that watching highlights and full games are two separate things entirely. You know the score on the highlights and just watch the lovely bits. The shows in real time have so many fouls and nasty bits and you don’t know what’s happening until the final whistle. I watched a whole match and the ends of two others yesterday and all three of the teams I was cheering for lost.
I had one day of disappointment, not sure how you have handled decades of it Roger.

Once again, Scotland are coming home after the opening group stage. Having watched all their appearances in World Cup finals since 1974, this is not a surprise. We NEVER qualify for the second phase but I'm fine. Honestly, I'm fine.
I'll stop now. My fingers are slipping on my tear-stained keyboard.

I gave up on soccer for most of the day yesterday, but then watched two exciting re-caps and some brief goals on my newsfeed.
Glad Ecuador won - especially as I would not have allowed that first German goal - that one guy kicked the Ecuadorian in the face like he was trying out for the Moulin Rouge. That last minute goal by Turkey was exciting but that was all I saw of that match.
Scotland may have won if they were not up against Brazil, the team and especially the fans brought so much energy and joy to the Americas - they won hearts.

I am pretty chuffed with today's Canada vs South Africa result.
I watched the whole match and some preamble and nothing was happening for so very long, I felt my eyelids starting to droop - then pow! all that excitement.

I've decided to apply for the vacant Scottish coach job. I will insist on having my granddaughter as assistant. This will mean that, during training sessions, we will have a lengthy nap break. I'll let you know how I get on.

There have been so many wonderful heartfelt stories of the players and the fans - it has been about so much more than soccer. Even the rallies against the cheating and racism have been heartwarming.
Out of "my" five teams only Norway remains, and their group Viking photo was the thing that got me into watching the world cup for the first time, so I will be cheering for them against England. My husband and children are part Norwegian.
I explained to my husband that new this year the games have a refreshment break half way through each half - with all the stories of the Scottish drinking Boston and flights dry, he wondered if it were they that instigated that LOL
But you know you may be onto something with the lengthy nap break during training - try everything

It was like the 4 teams who were supposed to win won.
The refs calls were just but not necessarily equal. The incidents they let slip by were what nudged the games in the directions they were meant to go. Haaland who dragged the world along with his Cinderella story let us all down, especially his teammate Heggem when he sabotaged his own team's potentially winning goal.
I will see this World Cup out, but I think it will just be a one time fandom for me. Being a football is suffering 90 mins of anxiety and generally a feeling of disappointment.
Out of the 4 teams going to semi-finals I think Spain has the most gentlemanly, zippy and accurate team.

You're spot on, Diane - we've now whittled it down to the four FIFA top-ranked teams before the tournament even started (although the top three have shuffled a bit, but England remain in 4th place). Which basically means the past month has been a complete waste of time, and I've been depriving myself of sleep for nothing so far. I think Haaaaaaland wasn't well. Why else would you hook the best striker on the planet with 15 minutes left to grab an equaliser, when he'd hardly done anything throughout the game?

Who am I supporting now? Well, I always say never write off the Germans, since I'm half Deutsch. But I'm afraid the horse bolted on that one weeks ago now. So it has to be Argentina for me. They've always been very welcoming to Germans, particularly after World War Two.

My husband is also 1/4 French and 1/4 German (or Romanian depending if there was a war on and a flexible border).
I love to see Mbappe smile after he scores a goal, you can see his real joy in game.
My Dad was also very welcoming of the Germans after the war, after being a POW himself and losing half his body weight - then escaping to Switzerland. He was in charge of a team of German POWs who were working on the sea wall in Wallasey. He and my mother somehow managed to scrape up Sunday dinners for them each week.
I had fun in my Pokémon world this past weekend - it was the annual GO Fest - big game rewards. Met up with local players in town, some stayed all day and some came and went on lunchbreaks etc) and we drove around all day from raid to raid and also went out for lunch. I made GO Fest badges. We would pull up 4 cars wide with our windows down to communicate or huddle on the sidewalk, we had one little excited boy with us who would shout out "We're going in!" and "Shields Down!" along with the rest of us. Brilliant summer day :-)

Scotland took the scenic route to a heroic second place, and their triumph in the battle for our affections was marred only by their exceptional skill in not winning.

Spain winning restored some of my faith in the competition. In my new-to-this humble opinion, I think they were the only one of the four quarter finalists that had a "fair" game. I am rooting for them to win the whole thing now.
I don't know what this "leave the tent" soccer term is and if it would be a good or bad thing.

Not actually a soccer term, Diane, but a borrowing of the quote by Captain Lawrence Edward Grace "Titus" Oates. Google can explain it far better than I can.
My reasons for 'leaving the tent' should England win tonight are to spare me from having to endure whatever outcome a Spain v England final might bring, and my 'tent mates' from my own shortcomings as a result. Suffice it to say, my long-held antipathy towards Spain is entirely personal, illogical and petty, and has nothing to do with football (sorry, I can't use "soccer" twice, even though it is actually an English word, not an American term as so many people seem to think), although they are also guilty of perfecting the most mind-numbing form of the game ever (Tiki-taka), where they literally bore their opposition to a state of stupor through multiple innocuous small passes around their own half of the pitch until their opposition fall asleep, and then pass their way forward to score an easy goal. For that alone, I will never be a fan.
As for England, they have inflicted their 60 years of hurt on we Scots for at least six decades now, and if anyone presumes winning the bloody thing again will make that stop, they're only kidding themselves. It'll be 'rinse and repeat until long after I'm gone, but for the rest of my days at the very least. I should stress that it's the English commentators and media, and not the players that are the problem. Although Jude Bellingham adopting a crucifixion pose after scoring a goal to once again 'save' his team from abject humiliation doesn't help. I know the joy of scoring goals (I have a long enough memory), but the "worship me now!" stance never entered into it before. Very distasteful, and pretty embarrassing.

The way I see it is that it's Argentina's to lose today - and so they might the way this competition seems to have been scripted. Hopefully its a fair match and the better team wins.
I am a lonesome World Cup fan so it was fun yesterday that my niece texted me throughout the game about the game so we kind of watched it together.
If, after the whole thing, you are feeling down in the dumps, I want to recommend a fun little soccer film by Taika Waititi that I came across called "Next Goal Wins" based on the true story of the American Samoa team. A lighthearted feel-good movie.

I don't think there's the same 'history' between the nations in Sunday's game, Diane. But once Argentina decided to play their best game rather than settle old scores, the match improved considerably. That said, I admit I rather enjoyed it all.
Don't forget to tune into Saturday's 3rd/4th place runners-up match between France and England. It's the game everyone wants to see scrapped (except FIFA), and instantly forgets once the final whistle blows, but I have a sneaky feeling this one could be a cracker. Again, 'history' may well play its part.

The English manager, Tuchel, has been heavily criticised for his tactics and substitutions during the match against Argentina. This is understandable and, in some ways, justified. However, the main reason England lost the match is straightforward. Argentina were the better side. By far.
In my lifetime, I've been fortunate to see some amazing players. Pele. Cruyff, Eusebio, Maradona, Best, Beckenbauer and Paul Sturrock. (Okay, the last one may not be on everyone's list). Messi is up there with the greats and, for that reason, I'll be quite happy if Argentina win the whole thing with the little genius scoring a hat-trick.
By the way, I've always felt that Britain owning the Falklands is a bit like Argentina owning the Isle of Man...

Yeah, but it's more complicated than geography. Spain might have something to say about this with Gibraltar, Ceuta and Melilla. And just don't let Norway have the Shetlands back.

It is not much fun playing for third place. If I were those guys playing today, I would make a deal to sit the goalies out and make huge record breaking scores. There has been so much underhanded decision making in this world cup - this would at least give the fans a chuckle.

Looking forward to todays Spain v Argentina game. From how I've seen them play, I am rooting for Spain, the more gentlemanly team. Argentina is the best at what they do, not sure if I would call it soccer though. Hope nobody is permanently injured on the Spanish side.
The nice thing is that I will have someone to watch with me today as my son is driving over, we will also do a nice Sunday dinner later with the family- already made the mini Pavlova bases last night.
Well I hope everyone has wonderful time - it was my first World Cup and it was more than I expected, not only the games but all the player and fan side stories. It makes me feel that the world can come together and maybe even tackle some our our pressing issues.

The first half of the game was a literal snore fest as hubby decided to watch his first soccer game because my oldest drove over to watch with me. Promptly fell asleep LOL
Glad things turned out as they did because Spain is a zippy, class act, and that the game wasn't decided by penalties. Such a lot of action if few goals resulted from it. I think Argentina were slightly better behaved but still favoured by the refs. Thanks go to both teams for entertaining about half the population of the globe
My daughter also showed up for the second half of the game - it is too bad they didn't all watch yesterday bronze match instead for their first games.

The only way the first half could have been more boring is if I had bothered to watch it.

By the final whistle, I wasn't as horrified by the Spain victory as I thought I might be. I'd have loved it to be the other way around, if only for Messi's sake, but they didn't really deserve it, and Spain weren't quite as boring as I they could have been. That said, the Saturday night goalfest exceeded even my own expectations and hopes, and it could have been even better if France had actually turned up before the second half.
For numerous reasons though, I'm very happy it's finally all over and we're back to proper football, as epitomised by the Scottish Professional Football Leagues and the League Cup Qualifiers. I can't say I enjoyed the World Cup Tournament overall though, and not just because the Scots packed their bags early yet again. Lots of aspects I found pretty frustrating and often annoying (maybe I've reached peak curmudgeonliness in my advancing years - just glad Mince beat me to it by at least a decade), culminating in me being in very rare agreement with Wayne Rooney over his assessment of the half-time show on Sunday ("I thought it was crap.") - highlight of the day for me.
But I'm really glad you enjoyed embracing so much of it, Diane. Your unfolding commentary and appreciation has trumped most of the negative aspects of the past few weeks for me.
And speaking of Trump, I was almost disappointed at how well behaved he was for most of the game, and he even seemed to be enjoying dishing out the medals. But then he couldn't resist photobombing the Spanish team's celebration pictures, whilst Infantino tried to drag him away... absolutely priceless! :D

Just a few weeks ago, you'd have got better odds on me saying either of those things than Cape Verde winning the trophy 5-0.

I watched at least 10 full games and maybe over 80% of the re-caps - between that, gardening, good TV and all the Pokémon events this month, I find I haven't read a book in almost two months!
Spent the last two days catching up on farm bookwork and giving the house a deep clean for company this coming weekend, so I don't know if I will miss soccer in my life.
I think my next obsession will be getting to the city to see the Odyssey and then getting lost on Wikipedia afterwards LOL
