Isn't it odd that this actor will forever be known for this role, but probably for no other? He only appeared (I think) in one episode of Dad's Army. As Wiki puts it: "Philip Madoc (5 July 1934 – 5 March 2012)[2] was a Welsh actor who had many television and film roles, including the lead roles in the detective series A Mind to Kill and The Life and Times of David Lloyd George. However he is perhaps most widely remembered for his role as a U-boat captain in an episode of Dad's Army."

That, and having been married to Ruth ("Hi de hi, Campers!") Madoc.

I do actually recall him as being a particularly fine actor in a number of tv appearances, and although I can't recall what the series was, I remember him (and Ruth, I think) on a show where they delivered some wonderful Welsh poetry and monologues, with great style and humour.

A Mind to Kill was on at the weekends on Channel 5 when it began transmitting in the late 90s. I watched one episode and it reminded me of Taggart only with stranger accents and more fog. However, I did like Philip Madoc in it. He had an amazing voice - which seems to be a regular blessing for Welsh actors...with the possible exception of Rhys Ifans

I've seen that clip 100's of times and it still makes me laugh. I met Philip Madoc back in 1998 when the Dad's Army Appreciation Society organised a convention for the programme's 30th Anniversary. 

He was also very good in the much-slated BBC2 sitcom 'Oribble, when he played a Welsh gangster called Mervyn Rees. I don't think it's ever been repeated, but bootleg DVDs are available, and I think it can be see on YouTube. Don't let the fact that it was written and starred Johnny Vaughan put you off.

A great actor (Philip Madoc, not Johnny Vaughan).
