In addition to not actually knowing who he is, I just discovered that he [from Wikipedia] "declined to play the role of Charles Lindbergh in The Spirit of St. Louis because he did not respect Lindbergh's early support of the Nazi regime in Germany prior to America's entry into World War II." James Stewart took the part, so I guess Stewart cared less.

My sister fell in love with John Kerr after he starred in South Pacific.
His decision not to portray Lindbergh is admirable. Having said that, if all actors refused to play characters they didn't approve of, the movie industry might struggle.

I assume it was the fact that he turned down the Lindbergh role that attracted her to him.

I have not seen South Pacific, but now that I see Ray Walston was in it, I might watch it.
