I came across the word "scofflaw" the other day. I rather like it.

At least there is no law against sneering.
People will come from strange lands to hear me speak my words of wisdom. They will ask me the secret of life and I will tell them. Then maybe I'll finish off with a song. The Nomad

Anyway, here's a puzzle:

Jack was seven years old the day before yesterday. He'll be ten years old next year. Explain how is this possible.

I like scofflaw, it reminded me of an old favourite television programme, "Call My Bluff", I tried to figure out if it's clearly related definition would actually exclude it being selected as the correct definition, simply as being too obvious.   Ah for the days of Robert Robinson, Frank Muir, Arthur Marshall and Patrick Campbell, to name but a few.

It was a programme for natural liars, cheats and con merchants. I love it (even took part in a version of one we did at school - I was rubbish at it, I'm proud to say).

Jack's weird.

I apologise, in advance.

Jack's weird.

It was perfect for natural liars!

Jack's birthday is 31st December, and he's nine, the next day it's a new year so he's ten...and work it backwards.

Nope - not getting this. Jack's not the only weird one...

No, he was seven years old the day before yesterday. How can he be nine?

Jack was seven years old the day before yesterday. He'll be ten years old next year. Explain how is this possible.

Jack's birthday would have to be 31 DEC and the current date would have to be 01 JAN for this to work. Jack would have been seven on 30 DEC the year before. So on 31 DEC the year before he was eight. This year, on 30 DEC 2015, he will be nine. So next year he will be ten.

He's still not getting a birthday present.
