Our National Anthem.

Why do we have such a ludicrous national anthem? We only ever sing one verse of it and there's nothing national or anthemic about it. All we do in it is ask God to save a woman, albeit a noble, gracious one. Then we ask Him to make her happy, glorious and victorious. And that's it. What about US? What about our NATION? I am going to dedicate 2009 to finding a suitable anthem for our nation. The working title for it is " Bouncy Bouncy Britain Boogie".

I've always hated the national anthem, it's total pants.

God Save The Queen is actually a German hymn, the Americans know the tune as My Country 'Tis Of Thee, so it's not even unique or Brit-specific.

It also has that verse about "rebellious Scots to crush" which everyone glosses over.

I agree that our national anthem should celebrate the country as a whole, even if it gets a little bit daft "soaring mountains, golden sands, fields of emerald green", etc... It's best to leave out specifics like squirrels, poll tax and the Welsh, but dumbarse athletes will blubber and cry at bugger all on the podium, so you can pretty much get away with anything.

Actually, I like Malc's idea of incorporating squirrels in the anthem. I'm going to work on this.

Only red squirrels, mind. Red squirrels are native.

 Grey squirrels are an introduced species from N. America. They're bigger, more aggressive and have taken over huge tracts of woodland with promises of chewing gum and nylons.

In its defence, one of the verses does make a rather futile attempt to rhyme "arise" with "enemies". Points for trying, anyway...

Indeed, the b-side of "Electric Avenue" was a little-known song that rhymed "arise" with every other known word in the English language. Norwegian too. Sadly, this song has already been adopted as the national anthem of the Comoros.
