I Like Stuff About King Arthur
« on: June 27, 2007, 01:16:04 PM »
Roger has a Custer fetish, as we all know, but my own predilection is for anything to do with King Arthur.
There's a growing body of evidence to say that he lived not in or around Cornwall, but near Shrewsbury at present day Wroxeter (then called Viriconium).

I love all this stuff. I don't know why. Alongside my other interests, which are the life of Christ and the history of the Middle East, they take up my entire reading time. I very rarely read fiction.

Do any of you lot have an abiding interest in any famous historical personages or periods?

Malc, my recent hot air balloon trip on Easter Sunday took off from a field just outside Wroxeter. The picture below shows my view just seconds after take-off. In the centre, you can see a group of caravans, from where we launched, and to the right are the Roman remains of Viriconium. We didn't have time to take a look around the remains that day, but we have promised ourselves a day out again there soon as it all looked rather splendid.

I wish I'd known about the King Arthur theory on the day as I drifted skywards.

I apologise, in advance.

What a coincidence! To think Viroconium was right there all the time.
My oldest son lives in Bristol, and if he can't get to Scotland or Manchester to see me when I come over, I might travel down past Wroxeter to check the place out.
I'm a bit pressed for time though. I have to see and do everything (including visiting my mum in Scotland , the in-laws in Manchester, some friends in London and a wedding in Ireland) in five weeks before heading back to Oz.

Keep me posted, Malc - if you get anywhere near Wroxeter, or indeed Shropshire/North Wales, let me know and I'll drive over to meet you with some cheese sandwiches and fizzy pop.
I apologise, in advance.

I pretty much like History in general. I'd love to travel back to Ancient Rome or Egypt and find out how those stunning civilisations began. I'd then pop over the Atlantic and do the same in Peru and Mexico. Needless to say, I would also love to browse around the Old West in the 1870's.
For Christmas, I'd like a time machine, please.

Tarquin, I'll make sure I get your phone number before I go so I can give you a ring.

Naturally you'll be in the jacuzzi with the missus, enjoying a bottle of champagne in a candle-lit atmosphere when the call comes through, but hey, I don't get over there that often...

That's my stage name, Roger. I don't like to be too flash when I'm performing.
I apologise, in advance.

I've edited it back to Tarquin. I didn't realise I was blowing anyones' cover. Should I adopt a nom de plume?

I shall henceforth be called Malky De Plume.

Not to worry, Malc - the begging emails will stop anon.

I'd invite you to join us in the jacuzzi (plenty of Champagne for all), but I prefer to know exactly where the bubbles are coming from.

Oh, and I know you meant it in a non-literal sense, but 'the missus'...isn't. She doesn't like there to be any confusion about that.

Malky De Plume is an excellent stage name - now if you can just come up with an act...
I apologise, in advance.

Don't worry about the bubbles in the jacuzzi, I always own up to my own with a lusty shout of "good arse!!!"

I apologise, in advance.
