Me, Sherlock and other stuff.
« on: January 27, 2017, 08:20:42 PM »
Well, I have finally and fully recovered from the bug that had laid me low recently. Indeed, I strolled round the local golf course on Wednesday, breathing freely and sinking ridiculous putts on my way to a 4-birdie round of 73. A fine day.
I'm still finding it extremely strange not to be writing comic strips and working to deadlines for the first time in nearly 40 years. A huge part of my life has disappeared, almost overnight, and it's taking me time to adjust. As I've mentioned many times before, I was only 24 years old when I came up with the idea of Beau Peep and it's weird not to have all those characters bouncing around in my head.
Talking about weird, I was discussing the recent BBC series of Sherlock with my sister and we both came to the same conclusion---we simply couldn't decide if we liked it or not. The final episode was so jaw-droppingly, laughably bad that belief had to be not only suspended but hung by the neck until dead. And I watched every second of it.
As far as my writing is concerned, I'm still working on my book and some football articles for magazines but a lack of deadlines means that I am very easily distracted. At Christmas, my son gave me a second-hand Nintendo gizmo with the Goldeneye game we used to play together when he was a kid---a glorious, nostalgic present. Between that and daily episodes of Law and Order on the box, how's a guy supposed to work?

This is the first I am reading about you going into retirement now. I have only been a fan of the published books with not having access to a daily newspaper since 1989.

Did you finish off the story? If so what happened to everyone? It would be very nice if a complete HB book set of the strips could be made such has been done for Calvin & Hobbes and The Far Side.

I personally thought the Sherlock stories with Cumberbatch were very cartoony much like superhero movies.

Do you guys have Netflix yet? We finally got decent AND affordable internet in December and have been watching a lot of Scandinavian detective shows. We are currently having a break from them and watching an Australian series. Love having no adverts and being able to stop and start them when you like.

Sounds like you are doing well at golf  (y)

I managed to program a set of iEnumerables as a single enumerable using 'yield'. A similarly fine day.

I agreed with the twitter review that called it 'incomprehensible boll*&%s'.

I'd explain what it all means but I'm worried that Roger might do the same with his golf, so I won't.

GIMP isn't free it is by donation.

Sadly, Diane, the "retirement" wasn't voluntary. Beau Peep was just another victim of the financial cuts being made today in the newspaper industry. We were given a month's notice by letter so, as I had already written all the strips needed, I became instantly unemployed!
I am considering many ways to pass the vacant hours. Folk-dancing, balloon-modelling and lots of other stuff with hyphens. I'm also toying with writing a cookbook called "Raccoon Recipes of the Alberta Plains". I'll be in touch!

I am sorry to hear about that Roger  :( Not a nice way to reward all those years of service. Not a nice way to leave the beloved characters either. Dennis could have got a bike for example. Egon could have retired to a vodka farm.
