Chestnuts.

There's a T.V. programme on in the background at the moment which is waffling on about how roasting chestnuts is such a huge part of Christmas. Am I alone in never having roasted a chestnut in my life? I hate all nuts. And cheese. I'm not wild about melon either.

I roasted chestnuts once. I think they were chestnuts anyway. And they were in the oven, not on an open fire.

I'm with you, Roger. I've never roasted a chestnut, or even eaten one! I like nuts (especially pistachios??spelling??) and cheese and melon!

Come to think about it, wasn't it a good thing that mommy was only kissing santa clause underneath the missletoe!

Well let that be a challenge to us all - let's roast chestnuts on an open fire, ring silver bells in the city, and hitch up a horse to a sleigh!

Or we could sit on the couch and eat goodies whilst watching Muppets Christmas Carol your choice.

I think we should all go out and gather Winter fyoo-oo-ell. It's freezing here tonight and we've got snow, although I'm guessing it's a bit nippier in Alberta, Diane. Have my favourite moose arrived yet?

I had quail for my dinner tonight---the first time in my life I'd tasted these posh sparrows. They were going cheap in Tesco's (PLEASE no jokes, Nige) so I thought I'd give them a try. Instead of just bunging them in the oven, I suppose I should have marinaded them in wine and browned them in goose fat or something but I didn't. These birds are pointless, bony and have a stupid name. I do not recommend these avian anorexics.
That's a fiver I'll never get back.

Stories involving the eating of quail always described them as "plump". I can only assume the free range birds of old were quite tubby, certainly enough so to be asked to play Santa every year, which they presumably got fed up with.

The Tesco version would be a stringy, cheaper mass-farmed type, typical Tesco home brand - looks like the quality version but without the taste and too much extraneous matter.

  The chicken I got from Sainsbury's wasn't much bigger than a Quail! We'll love it just the same!!!

We picked up a cooked chicken from a local fast food place which opens half day Christmas to cater for those who don't want to cook at home.

These little fast food chooks aren't really worth the bother. Little skinny things. I almost feel like joining the vegans.
