If a striker hits a ball at 55 miles per hours, and he's 17 yards out from goal, kicking directly into a force-7 wind, what speed is it traveling when it crosses the line? 

This is difficult to answer because you're not specifying the direction of the wind into which he is kicking. I'd assume you meant that he's kicking it towards the goal... in which case I still can't answer you, because that seems to be an alien concept around these parts.

Yes, but you didn't say whether the wind was coming straight from behind the goal or, say, over by the corner flag. If he's kicking directly into the wind coming from over by the corner flag, clearly the ball has to travel further before crossing the goal line (albeit not between the posts).

That's Pythagoras' Theorem, that is. Though I suspect he probably expected it to be put to better use.
