First barbecue of the year.
« on: May 30, 2009, 08:22:31 PM »
As temperatures here in Scotland soared above freezing, I decided to treat my wife and son to the delights of a barbecue. As many of you will know, I'm quite the expert in alfresco cooking. Like most top chefs, I'm reluctant to give away my secrets but what the hell. What you do is set fire to bits of animals and drink lots of wine. Girly things like salad are optional.

Unlike most of Australia, I do not own a barbeque. We always get invited to other peoples, so we never found the need to have one of our own.
Roger, if we lived in Scotland we would allow you to invite us to your barbeque, and we would bring our own sausages.

On the subject of sausages, Australian sausages are rubbish. They tend to be large, about the size of German bockwurst, and taste of preservative or some kind of awful spice or something.
When I came to the UK not too long ago, I overloaded on the British sausages because I hadn't tasted anything that nice in a long time.

There is a growing industry here in "British" meat, i.e. cured or prepared in the Brit style, and Aussies are coming over to it, but the standard barbie still consists of Aussie steak (often delicious) and Aussie "snags" (sausages) invariably served in a hot dog bun. They're crapola and you have to smother them in tomato sauce, but generally by the time you've arrived at a barbie you'll eat anything.

I think we should all get an invite to Roger's next BBQ.

It would be fun.

That's a great idea. We really ought to have a get-together. Maybe in Dundee, Portugal, Ontario, Sydney, or Manila.

Or we could all go to Malc's place.  ;D Much warmer this time of year than Sydney.  I'll bring a portable barbecue and the British sausages.  There must be a British butcher somewhere around here.

I love our barbecue.  It's just outside the back door and gets used at least once or twice a week. The reason I love it is that the boys do the cooking and there's very little cleaning up.  :)

I wonder if it's possible to barbecue mince?

Personally, I would get more pleasure seeing him spit-roasted on an open fire.

Oh please let me be the one in charge of sticking him with the fork to be sure he's done.

I suppose mince could be moulded into a patty. Bit like a burger. Oh, hang on - it would be a burger!
