Thank you, guys! What a lovely cake, Diane.  It looks like fruit cake - yum! Hope there's marzipan under the icing.  I never get to have iced fruit cake these days with marzipan - Christmas cakes generally don't have icing on them in Oz.

I had a lovely day.  Went for a leisurely bushwalk with friend, then back to the marina for lunch. It was a beautiful winter's day here in Sydney - got up to 18C.  Then out to dinner in the evening with Trevor.

Happy Birthday, Joan! I was going to wish you a great day but it seems like you've already had one. These time zones are really confusing.

Look - it's a light sabre, okay!

Many happy returns, Joan.

I apologise, in advance.

Oh God! Thanks, TT and Malc - I needed that!  Very good for you first thing in the morning. The tears are streaming down my face (of laughter, that is).

Thank you Roger and Tom too - I agree about the time zones, Roger.  DD has just been in the States and I had to look on the laptop every time I wanted to know what time it was there - LA is 17 hours behind us, New York 14.  Kate should just have landed in Sydney - should be picking up my gin in the duty free shop about now. Her friend's parents are picking them up, which is great, as the flight landed at 6.20am.  The airport shuts overnight and opens at 6am, so you get heaps of overseas flights coming in between 6 and 7.

This is SYDNEY airport, remember. Australia's busiest airport shuts at night. A little bloke with a limp pulls down the roller shutters, checks the padlocks, lights a ciggie and pedals off on his bike.

I love this idea. We're the twilight-lit retirement home of the world, where everyone says "g'day" and gets up at 5am to celebrate ANZAC day and the brave diggers who fought in the war. We have the most official holidays of any developed country (I don't count Spain as developed) and Australian TV drama consists of people in uniform carrying on their romantic liaisons with colleagues whilst rapelling down the sides of buildings. This is a country where you see huge schoolboys wearing school shorts, socks pulled properly to their knees, over hairy legs which look like burst sofas. This is a country where the trilby never went out of fashion. This is a country where "Australian comedian" is a contradiction in terms, and where a small homosexual called Molly, whose trademark is a cowboy hat is the leading commentator on popular music.

I don't want Australia to change.

I saw those previews too, Malc - forgot when it was on, though.  Saw one episode last season, but most of the steamy bits were in the locker room.

I remember being amazed the first time I landed at an antipodean airport (it was Auckland, but the same thing happened in Australia) and before we were allowed to move, these men in short sleeved shirts, ties on, shorts, long socks and lace-up shoes came down the aisles spraying insecticide into the air.  The flight attendants had already had one go, so it wasn't the spraying that got to me, it was the sight of these grown men in shorts and long socks.  By the time you came here, Malc, they may have decided that they probably weren't just killing the insects, but possibly the people too and stopped doing it.  I realised, when I became part of the work force, that this was the "uniform" for most males in the public service.  This was the '80s and you won't see them in Sydney any more, but maybe in your neck of the woods, Malc?
