Site difficulties.
« on: November 24, 2009, 11:43:33 AM »
I was speaking to Andrew today and he tells me that he---and others---are having problems accessing this site. It would appear that the site itself is difficult to get into and, once in, it's not easy to reply to posts. I explained that the set-up had been altered to combat the flood of pornographic spam we were attracting. Would it be possible for the mods to stick a "how to access" thread in the forum somewhere to help the lurkers get involved? From what Andrew understands, quite a few people have given up trying.

I just clicked on the "Register an Account" link on the forum's first page, and it came up "Page not found".

Mince set this up, so I can't do anything myself. I hope he reads this.

I'll try and email him.

Registration should work now. Ask everyone to use the registration tab.

Andrew hasn't been able to get on here for 10 years you can't blame Mince for that.  ;D

I see we've already attracted a dodgy post in the Horace section. I'm much too timid to look.

I looked - it's gone. Sorry to anyone who saw it and didn't want to, and to anyone who might have wanted to but didn't.

I suspect we may be in for the old problem of unwanted guests on a regular basis. I'd rather not shut the door again, but I do think we need to do something to regulate who joins this site. Those that were having problems recently - didn't they get the option to apply for approval?
I apologise, in advance.

I will soon upgrade this site to 2.0, which should give us other options.

An option for the moment is to allow new members only to post in one hidden forum in which they introduce themselves. If they do so nicely, they are allowed to post in the other forums. How does that sound?
