What are these silly hats called?
« on: February 12, 2010, 07:49:05 PM »
I was wandering round Dundee at lunchtime and couldn't help noticing that every third person was wearing one of those silly, wooly Winter hats with dangly bits hanging down on each side that look like pigtails. I'm not sure about the look these people are going for. Is it the Peruvian goatherder or the Finnish reindeer botherer? Do they have a name, these things?

They're usually named Effie in Dundee, I think, Roger, but occasionally Shona.
I apologise, in advance.

Are you referring to these?:

If so, I've no idea.

I don't know what the real name is. I've always called them Jayne Hats, purely because the first time I ever saw one was in the most excellent (and sadly cancelled) television series "Firefly". They seem to have grown ever more popular since - you see them everywhere nowadays.

Research (by which I mean google) indicates that they are widely known as "Peruvian Hats" (also known as Peruvian Beanie; Peru Beanie Hats, Ear Flap Hats, Nepal Hats or Choopa Hats)

Peepmaster: A "Képi" appears to be one of those silly flat-topped hats like French policemen wear.

I just googled hats with dangly bits to find the above images. I was nearly in two minds about searching.

I have always called them El Condor Pasa hats because the first time I ever saw one it featured on that song's record sleeve.

I just tried to find it on Google Images but can't find the image but it looked a lot like this:
