April 14
1543 - Bartoleme Ferrelo returned to Spain after discovering San Francisco Bay in the New World. Pity the Panama Canal wasn't open.

1865 - U.S. President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in Ford's Theater by John Wilkes Booth. He actually died early the next morning.

1912 - The Atlantic passenger liner Titanic, on its maiden voyage hit an iceberg and began to sink. 1,517 people lost their lives and more than 700 survived.

It was my late father's birthday too.
Nostalgia is not what it used to be. 😟

and 20 years ago today I was standing up as maid-of-honour for my husband's sister in an ugly green lacy dress.
People will come from strange lands to hear me speak my words of wisdom. They will ask me the secret of life and I will tell them. Then maybe I'll finish off with a song. The Nomad

Quite a few years before that, in 193 in fact, Lucius Septimus Severus was crowned emperor of Rome.

It was the first time a toga was later converted into a lacy green dress.
Nostalgia is not what it used to be. 😟

...although I'm confused now. Was it Diane or her husband's sister in the ugly green dress?

I've just come back from visiting my kid brother in Cleckheaton - he was born on this day, fifty years ago.
I apologise, in advance.
