2011 Oscars

Having managed to get an (ahem) advanced copy of True Grit may I propose Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld for Actor and Actress of 2011.

Oh and Matt Damon isn't terrible either.

I liked the original with John Wayne, this is closer to the book, the dialogue in particular.

Who's playing the role Glen Campbell did (La Boeuf)?

Scratch that - I should have googled it before asking.  I did not know they were doing the film again.

I got a free copy of C Chaplin's 'Modern Times' from the nice people at iTunes.

Reviews were good for this, Max...must be one of the few times when a remake was better.  Don't know if Jeff Bridges would get a gong twice in a row but it's OK with me if he does.  Word on the street (in the absence of ahem advance copies) is Colin Firth as George VI could be nominated.

Is there a Police Academy movie nominated this year?

I liked the original, so I'd really love to see the remake. I also loved the dialogue, very convincing like the Lonesome Dove stuff, redolent of the time and much more interesting that the let's-head-'em-off-at-the-pass rubbish I was used to.

Still a sucker for Wayne as a star, despite his right wing dumbo patriotism, and love any John Ford/Wayne westerns, which make me nostalgic for a time in which I did not live and of which I had no knowledge.

I wasn't wild about the original True Grit but I look forward to seeing the remake. As Malc says, the best Wayne films were the ones made with John Ford----The Searchers, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon etc.
I can't remember if I've mentioned this before, but, when I worked at D.C. Thomson, a guy in my office used to do the television reviews for the Dundee Courier. One afternoon, he was checking out what he'd have to watch that night and was dismayed to discover a John Wayne film on the schedule. (He loathed John Wayne, for some reason). I gave him a line that he used in the following day's column...
It never Waynes but it bores.
The Peepmaster would have been proud of that.

Cracking line, bro (I hadn't heard that story before).  I hope he had the decency to credit you for it......
