I don’t find gardening sexy. I’m covered in mosquito bites, have a farmer’s tan and my heels went to hell before I used “Heel Rescue” cream at $15 a tub. Then moving dead wood and old bricks for a few hours at a time means you can’t move much and get calluses.  You have to wonder why gardening is so enjoyable really, what with the mud and the worms and assorted bugs.

Roger and Tarqs you missed our birdhouse project my daughter and I did this weekend after the thunder storm (shown on Facebook) they were pre-built but we painted them and made the clay decorations. Now they are varnished and super-glued to posts in the garden. I had thought that duct tape was my best friend handi-women-wise, but no, it turns out super glue is tops!

Is the super-glue permanent enough? I'm worried that you'll one day have a family of dicky-birds sent crashing to the ground.

Different birds like different sized entrance holes, and the hole size depends on the species you hope to attract.

As a rule-of-thumb, I usually follow this guide...

25 mm for blue, coal and marsh tits
28 mm for great tits, tree sparrows and pied flycatchers
32 mm for house sparrows and nuthatches
45 mm for starlings
3 ft for vultures

A small box with 100 mm high open front may attract robins or pied wagtails.
A wren would need a 140 mm high front panel, while spotted flycatchers prefer a low 60 mm front to the box.

How big for penguins? They are all the rage right now and I would like to attract some to my garden.
