Going for a walk.
« on: February 20, 2013, 09:19:08 PM »
I've never understood the attraction of "going for a walk". Now, don't get me wrong, I have nothing against taking a bit of exercise. I will happily walk for miles---and I do every week---while pulling a trolley full of golf clubs behind me. As a non-driver, I will also walk to the shops, the museum, the library and the lap-dancing club without complaint. The point is that, well, there is a POINT to these walks. I see absolutely no reason to walk simply for the sake of it. Surely, there has to be SOME kind of objective. I could understand the concept if you're on holiday somewhere and you want to wander around and check things out, take in some new sights or find your bearings, if you like. But what on earth is the point of going for a walk in your local area?

There's football on TV tonight and my wife asked me if I'd like to go for a walk.

My guess is that you had the TV on too loud and she wanted you out the house for a bit. Seeing as she knows you, and knows you need a reason, you would think she could have sent you out to buy some milk or something if she wanted to get rid of you for a bit.

It is a puzzle.

I hope her suggestion allowed for you to turn round halfway and come back. If it did, you don't have too much to worry about.

She was obviously just trying to do a bit of keep fit, or maybe just in need of some type of recognition/praise thing that some women need from time to time.

The way I see it, you should have happily accepted and went for the walk. Upon completion of said walk, you should have patted her on the head, said well done, and told her that she did so well, that next week you'll let her try it pulling your golf-cart.

Win-win situation as far as I'm concerned.

You're a bit like those deep jungle natives, or Andean mountain runners, Roger, the ones who are super-fit, walk or run for hundreds of miles a week and who are amazed that so-called civilized people do it voluntarily, and for no discernible purpose.

I am reminded of a story I heard first hand from a guy who organized a Native Lifestyle exhibit in a big museum. He flew a number of genuine Amazonian tribesmen, plus their building materials, over to build an authentic native tree house within the museum. It was a hugely successful exhibit, but he was fascinated by their reactions to Western peoples' habits. For instance they were disgusted at the idea of toilet paper, and hooted uproariously at the sight of dogs on leashes. That's like you, that is, Roger.

At last, Malc---someone who understands me. The next time my asks me to join her for a walk, I will reply "Walk thyself, woman,  for I am an Andean mountain runner".

Hmmm, that language is more Amish than Andean, but I support the sentiment.

As a fellow Scot, Malc, you should realise the language is more Hamish than Andean.
