My Pal Elton Again. (News Update)
« on: July 04, 2007, 06:53:39 PM »
Various papers have reported Elton's triumphant exit after that weekend concert. He was being DRIVEN the 200 yards from backstage at Wembley to his dressing room. Royal security and police stopped his car as there were heightened concerns about the attendant Princes following the terrorist attacks in Glasgow and London. Reg opened his window.
"Out of the f****** way! I've been working all f****** day! I've got to get to my f****** dressing room!" He instructed his driver to go round the policeman and drive on. A hand was placed on the bonnet of the car and he was informed he would be arrested if he tried to continue.
Reg had to get out and walk the 200 yards. Dontcha just love him?

Sounds like the policeman showed quite phenomenal restraint. The temptation to shout "Keep yer hair on!" must have been overwhelming.
I apologise, in advance.

It's amazing really, people who believe their own press stories.

Thankfully I live in Scotland where we have a reliable link to normalcy.

Wet Wet Wet were quite a famous band at one time, all went to my old high school in Clydebank.

Marti Pellow went into a busy Haddows off licence in Dalmuir (an Olympic stonethrowers - on steroids with some exaggeration - distance from Clydebank - ok about a mile), walked to the front of the queue and asked for a bottle or two of champagne.

He was asked by the lady server to go back to the end of the queue and wait his turn, he then made a big mistake.

He said

"Do you know who I am?"

The lady, who's musical tastes were not really pop orientated said.

"Aye ah do, and yer music's sh**te"

Marti left the off licence, tail between legs.

My niece was in the queue and reported it verbatim.

Max, I'm sure I must have mentioned this before but did you know the Clydebank band Greenmantle? They were a sort of Crosby, Stills and Nash outfit and very, very good. I first met them in the early 70's and still keep in touch with one of them, Ian Campbell. The other two were called Jack Law and Billy Campbell.(No relation to Ian). Great memories.

Sorry Roger I don't know of the band.
By 1969 I had moved to Govan, as dad was a troubleshooter for the brewery.
He took over pubs with staff or customer problems, a euphemism for sacking or kicking the cr*p out of people.

Dad took his job seriously, a certain Scottish moneylending, murdering thug who latterly became an artist in prison was frogmarched out of my dad's pub by dad, and was thrown out onto a wet pavement never to return.
Dad had so many friends in the Glasgow underworld, that retaliation was never an issue.

Oh, sorry, couldn't find anything about that band on the search engines...

Having just read what you said about your dad, if I have ever, EVER said anything that has upset you, I am SO sorry.

Inspired by Max's post, I'm going to start a thread called Six Degrees Of Malky. Here's how it works:

1) Max's dad chucked out Jimmy Boyle
2) Jimmy Boyle was played by actor David Hayman
3) David Hayman directed The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists (7:84 theatre)
4) That production was written for the stage by writer Archie Hind
5) Archie Hind is my brother's ex father-in-law.

Okay, okay, so that wasn't true (before his lawyers call me).

I just wanted to sound like I had an intriguing father like Max. Mine was a child psychologist. Even Tony Blackburn is more interesting than that.
I apologise, in advance.

Tarquin, just be glad your dad had a great job.

Not having anything to measure against, dad was ok, like Doug Dinsdale he was harsh but fair.
He never hardly nailed my head to the coffee table, but only because we didn't own one.

I wish I could find the front page from the Evening Times where two gunmen tried to hold up his pub, it would be late 69 or early 1970.
The headline read "Harry faces gunmen terror" how damn good is that?

Someone knocked the door around 8 AM, dad, thinking it was the cleaners opened it slightly, using the old trick of having your foot pressed against it.
Two guys outside told him to open up then produced a rather large pistol (as the years went by the bore grew to be the size of the Clyde tunnel).
Dad slammed the door shut with his foot, threw the lock into place and ran back into the bar.

After a few double whiskies (yes that was in the press report) he called the cops.

They drove him around Govan, looking for suspects, but nobody was ever found.

Definitely a life less ordinary.

You see? My Dad was kicked on the shin by an eight-year-old delinquent once (I did apologise afterwards). No wonder I go looking for Tony Blackburn.

I'm sorry you didn't own any nails back then, Max, but in the circumstances it's perhaps just as well.
I apologise, in advance.

Roger, do want me to find six degrees of separation between those people and me, or six degrees of separation from each other?

Try Diane (CBPFC) and Diana (Late Princess).

1 Diane (CBPFC) lives near (in Canadian terms) Calgary
2 Diamond Lil has visited Calgary many times
3 Diamond Lil's wee brother is Roger
4 Roger's BP strip was commissioned by the Daily Star who hold annual Brave Children awards
5 On one such occasion Roger stood a few feet away from the late Diana

Very impressive - if only she'd known he was best buddies with Bill, I'm sure she'd have gone over for a ciggy and a natter. But where does Tony Blackburn fit into this?
I apologise, in advance.
