Too old for all this...

So, there I was, the intrepid cameraman on site at special stage no.2, “5 tons bridge” of the Manx Rally.   The time is 7:40 and the stage is about to begin, so naturally the sun is about to set, but that’s okay, we have two camera’s and we’ve read all we can possibly read about taking pictures in cloudy situations, low light…bring it on mother nature.

I should perhaps point out at this juncture that I’ve chosen not to use the flash, it’s a rally, I wouldn’t appreciate a flash going off in my face at seventy miles an hour so I figure neither would rally drivers.

Four hours later, and we have a grand total of twenty seven great shots…all of the moon, because that was all I could get right, other than about forty pictures of what could be a black horse running through a black thing surrounded by black stuff. So I’ve decided night rallies are a young man’s game, all that clambering over hedgerows, the midgies [many, many midgies], the freezing of one’s…

So it’s wildlife and landscapes from now on, the only night stuff being moon shots, sunsets and the occasional peep through the curtains of number 47 Acadia… well you get the picture…

Next time, take the lens cover off.
People will come from strange lands to hear me speak my words of wisdom. They will ask me the secret of life and I will tell them. Then maybe I'll finish off with a song. The Nomad

Could be worse. You could have been a sketch artist. Then you'd need to be really quick.

I share your photographic frustrations, Red. Last week, I was snapping away in the Bighorn mountains of Wyoming, standing at 8,000ft and looking over a vista that stretched for hundreds of miles. The photos turned out well but it's simply impossible to do justice to the stunning landscape within a 4" by 3" print. I did get some nice shots of a place called Shell Canyon, though---I pointed the camera over the edge of the huge drop and closed my eyes.

Closing my eyes might have worked better too. I liked the lens cover idea but I wasn't wearing one, I was wearing a hat but I took it off several times, so that can't have been the problem. Obviously I also put it back on several times, otherwise I would have had to have either been wearing several hats or a magic hat and that would have been cheating. A magic hat should probably be used for creating world peace or something, although after that I could ask it to make me a camera that is smart enough to ignore my instructions and take the pictures I meant to take instead.
