Virtual D.J.
« on: September 07, 2007, 09:28:00 PM »
When The Peepmaster posted John Lennon's wonderful "How Do You Sleep", I started getting a bit nostalgic and began trawling through YouTube. Here are some of my favourites. I make no claims for their musical brilliance and my choices certainly date me but I just love them.
Stand By Me...John Lennon. I actually prefer Ben E. King's version but the link from The Peepmaster's post started me off.
Rio...Mike Nesmith. The ex-Monkee done real good here.
Blue Bayou...Roy Orbison. Elvis Presley was once asked if he had any ambitions left. "To be able to sing like Roy Orbison", he replied. In my opinion, the greatest pop voice ever.
At Seventeen...Janis Ian. A 100% girlie song. Nothing has portrayed teenage angst better than this.
Nothing Rhymed... Gilbert O' Sullivan. Probably the most underrated song and most underrated performer in British music.
Anything by The Who.
A Whiter Shade Of Pale...Procol Harum. Simply very, very good.
Love Hurts...Nazareth. This is the most bitter, truthful song about love ever written.
A Little Bit Is Better Than Nada. Just trying to lighten the atmosphere.

And if you still need cheering up, check out the new advert from Cadbury's, featuring the drumming gorilla, also available on YouTube.

Roger, do you remember this? Ray Davies gave brother Dave centre stage.

"The trainer of insects is crouched on his knees,
And furtively looking for runaway fleas"

By the way, I adore "Nothing Rhymed". I sang it myself on stage once (kareoke).
Nostalgia is not what it used to be. 😟

I'm also a very late devotee of Morrissey:

Oh,Lord, the nostalgia! I LOVED The Kinks! "Lola" and "Waterloo Sunset" are as good as it gets. Then there's "All Day And All Of The Night", "You Really Got Me"". "Apeman",  "Dedicated Follower Of Fashion" and the unbelievable "Sunny Afternoon". I think I might cry.

Here's another fabulous singer and song. Ignore the words on screen. "Got my sick" should be "Got my sex"!

Nostalgia is not what it used to be. 😟

I answered this and my whole system cut out so, if I'm repeating myself, forgive me.
"Days"------brilliant.
Nina Simone-----brilliant.
I'd now like to add "Soldier Blue" by Buffy Saint Marie. (I'm sure I must be part Sioux).

Roger and Peepmaster! You took me back to my youth (at least, until Peepmaster got to Chris Montez, Radiohead and Morrissey, YUK!). Although The Beatles have always been my favourite band (being a Liverpudlian, it's obligatory!), you can't beat Roy Orbison, especially if you want a good cry. :'( sniff!
