I finally got round to watching this and I'm a bit baffled. I honestly don't know if this is a genuine tribute or a piss-take.

I can understand where you're coming from. I once watched a game of football, where twenty-two adult men voluntarily entered a rectangular field and spent ninety minutes running around in small groups after a ball, occasionally kicking it away from themselves and then chasing it again, unable to pick it up, despite their having hands, with others paying money to watch the whole thing. I was sure at one point that they were doing all this to confuse me.

Have you actually watched much Star Trek?

Not a lot, no, but I found it mildly amusing. It was clearly written and performed with tongue-in-cheek and I found that quite entertaining. I never really got into any TV science fiction. I was too young to watch Quatermass back in the Fifties but adults at the time regarded it as scary. I read and enjoyed quite a lot of science fiction books when I was younger with 1984 and The War of the Worlds still among my favourites.

I can to an extent understand the tongue-in-cheek: the original Star Trek could be camp, with low-budget sets, theatrical acting, and over-the-top costumes; the story-telling was light-hearted so that non-sci-fi fans could enjoy the ride; and sometimes futuristic concepts became absurd and comical.

The later Star Trek could be similar, but also grittier, with lines like: "What you call genocide, I call a day's work."

A great line. Weirdly, in my head, I can hear it in Schwarzenegger's voice!
