Charity.
« on: October 20, 2007, 06:32:27 PM »
I like to think I do my bit for charity---and I don't just mean sending original cartoon strips for money-raising auctions. There are several causes that I send a cheque to and have done for many years. Before I left on holiday, I was clearing my desk and sent out cheques to three charities. When I came back on Thursday, I had NINE letters from charities, asking for donations. I'm starting to think that some kind of "gypsy system" is being used. (In the old days, if gypsies were treated kindly at a house, they would leave a secret mark outside so that other gypsies knew that hospitality was available there).
Where do you draw the line? I mean, if you give to every charity that contacts you, you'd spend two hours a day writing cheques and I dislike the tactic of sending you a "gift" to encourage a reply. Any tips on how to be selective?

I, rightly or wrongly, send donation to just three charities. The same three each year. Envelopes from other charities are sent to recycling. Envelopes with 'gifts' in are returned marked 'not known at this address'.

If the government wasn't so busy using our tax to pay for wars and 'peace-keeping', children, old people, the disabled and the like would not be in such dire straits. There would be no need for charities.

I stopped supporting my favourite charity when I got 2 phone calls and 3 letters within a week asking me to increase my monthly donation.  I never did get a reply to my letter informing them of my decision to cancel the standing order and asking for a breakdown of their adminsitration costs.  Damn but I feel good after my holiday....so good to be back to my mean old self  8)...

Yes, in the "Crown versus Mince Wants A Load Of Money Bogus Charity Scam Case".

Now, surely, if it's a "Bogus" Charity Scam, then it's a genuine charity.

No, it's a "bogus charity" being used as a "scam". Me's right.

Don't worry. The hyphen's back from holiday in a few days.

If "bogus charity" is a noun phrase being used as a single adjective describing scam (which is what Roger is saying) then it should be hyphenated.
