Watching an old 78 go round and round...
« on: November 03, 2007, 06:58:05 PM »

My Grandad used to play me this on his wind-up gramophone.

Here's side 2...

Nostalgia is not what it used to be. 😟

It was one of my 'jobs' as a little girl to wind up my Auntie Jean's gramophone (remembering to put the brake on first!), so she could listen to her Johnny Ray records while she got ready to go to the local 'coffee bar' that had just opened up!

Imagine how much more of an icon Johnny Ray must have been in those days compared to (say) Robbie Williams today?

It would have been the equivalent to a Roman peasant knowing his Emperor only by the imprint on a coin.

To be confronted by the real person at a concert would have been truly mind-blowing. No wonder girls screamed their socks off.

It's quite weird really - watching, and hearing the primitive sound qualities of the old wind-up gramophone, via YouTube, globally, over the internet, and realising you've lived through much of that development.

Of course, it was old wax cylinders when Roger was a boy.

It just seems to me that this board has moved from a Beau Peep Forum to one where everyone (well not really everyone) is trying to have a pop at other posters trying to bring them down. It's really starting to get annoying now and it's only really started since Peepmaster came aboard.

It used to make me giggle at times reading some of the posts - not now.

I see what some people (Peepmaster) write and I just think, what's the point.

Rant Satire over.

It's not obvious enough that you're quoting from somewhere else, Mince.

What do you suggest - neon signs?

Is this a joke within a joke? In other words is Mince not really annoyed, just alluding to some in-joke earlier in the piece?

If so, I'm not amused.

So, er....pack it in.

Clearly we do need neon signs.

I almost feel we've come full circle.

Do you want me to get Tarkers to do it?

You'll have to. He never listens to me. He acts all obsequious but there is an undercurrent of bitterness and contempt.

The irony of this is that some of us don't know what others are talking about.

I loved listening to the gramophone. I have an Edison -- the tall floor model. I have quite a few of the very old, very thick records, too. I think they are pre-78s. Listening to the clip of the music has motivated me to get my gramophone (sometimes people call them victrolas) fixed.
