Talking of punching people in the nose, I just received an email from an American cartoonist asking me to fight him. No kidding, he can't stand me and the feeling is mutual. Things came to a head just a day or so ago, and he's had a brain meltdown, hence the hostile email.

I'm wondering whether there might be money in this? I mean, if the promotion was right.... If I hired a decent-sized venue, would you lot come to the States to watch two middle-aged cartoonists slog it out over, say...one round? If I get into training, I might manage two.

Roger, the guy in question is (in my opinion) a pretty awful character, a religious fundamentalist, a braggart, a serial self-publicist in the most awful manner (no charm, no sophistication) and he's generally unpopular, but no-one tells him.

Things came to a head when a discussion about the Iraq war got a little heated. He's a big supporter of God and the war, and backed up the sending of troops with flowery cartoons, romantically linking the war with praying soldiers, the US flag, angels, knights in armour, praying, the US flag, praying, etc, etc...

The guy is a big Bush supporter too, and recently used the name Bush alongside what he regarded as other "war" presidents, like Ike, FDR, etc.

I took exception to this, pointing out the Bush had basically started his own war, against an innocent nation, and that he was a cretin.

The guy also encouraged us to "understand" the reasons for continuing the war, and I asked him to explain to us what they were. He couldn't apparently, and signed off with "goodbye" followed up with an email invite for me and him to fight.

You could have replaced all this rhetoric by saying that the bloke was an American

Now, now...I know some wonderful yanks, and they can't stand this git either. He does, however, represent the worst stereotype - stetson hat and everything. His political camp (the loud and obnoxious god-bothering NRA members) are getting shirty as Bush's fortunes slowly dwindle and he comes closer to impeachment.
They're all running around trying to re-invent themselves as the Support Our Troops faction, regretting the war but deeming criticism of it unpatriotic.
In fact they started out as the Bomb Iraq Into The Stone Age faction and thought the Iraqis would have embraced democracy well before now, as well as starting their own gridiron league.
