Do you get this?
« on: January 06, 2008, 01:00:24 PM »
This is an old gag which has been languishing on my hard drive for ever.

I want to re-draw it, as my style today is very different, but I'm not sure if anyone even gets the gag.

To elaborate a bit, I particularly like a couple of things about it. The viewpoint is perfect---I'm not sure I'd have approached it from the same angle but it works perfectly. Secondly, the punchline is spot on. The temptation would have been to have the lawyer saying "Objection!". Going past that to the judge's denial makes it, in my opinion, even funnier. Great stuff.
P.S. If you DO re-draw it, I would give the victim legs. I'm sure Mince would have brought this up.

Mince made a mistake in his most recent post on another thread. I don't think he'll be showing his face around here for a while.

I also really like the gag. I think it's got legs.

Wot Roger said.

Since you're intending to redraw it, Malcolm (though I don't see that it's "very different" to your current style at all), would it be even tighter if the gunman had shot his victim from the witness box, M'Lud?
I apologise, in advance.

What makes me laugh, though I might have interpreted it incorrectly, is the man on the left with arms out, as though saying exasperatedly to the judge (after having lost several recent objections), "Come on!" But I am not sure if the gunman is now pointing his gun at him and that is why he has his arms out.

He would have his hands up if that was the case, Mincer. The alleged gunman, or rather, the guy holding the gun, does appear to be pointing it at him though, I'll grant you that.

He would not have his hands up if he was resigned to having his objection overruled by the judge - a kind of half-hearted gesture.

Good. All this suggests that you DO get it, and if you lot do, anyone will.

Er..hang on. I mean..

I totally agree with the direction of gunman's hand and addition of legs to the victim. I did think there needed to be sort of sprawled limbs there, so that we see the soles of victim's shoes.
Anyway, you'll see what I mean.

The gunman is actually opposing COUNSEL, not a witness or accused, but I can help that along by putting a person in the witness box.

I've done quite a bit of court stuff. I like courts.

And the man holding his hands up? What's he doing?

He's the lawyer who has just made an objection to the judge! I'm sorry, Mince, but if you don't understand this gag, I fail to see how you can follow the complexities of Beau Peep.

You just have to write "counsel" on the back of the appropriate person, Malc. That's what lazy cartoonists do anyway.

I did wonder about this initially, Malcolm, but the fact the witness box was empty swayed my mind that the gunman had just left it. I was going to suggest putting someone else in the box as a way of reinforcing the legal status of the gunman, but thought another body may add to the confusion rather than clear it up, and that the gag would still work if the gunman was the accused or a witness. However, I suppose most objections are made about the actions of an opposing counsel as opposed to their clients or witnesses, so maybe your solution would be best.

And people think we just go ahead and draw the first things that come into our heads. ::)

Anyways, I got the gag, and enjoyed it.
I apologise, in advance.
