Mighty Bulldogs latest.

We had our first loss today against the Gold Coast Rep side, and that means we (a humble club side) played the best players in the region, and only lost 5 -3.

Actually that doesn't even come close to describing the day.

We turned up at the Runaway Bay Super Centre (the venue) thinking that the other mob had booked the pitch, and found out they hadn't. We then were told that the game must be booked across the road at the Gold Coast Soccer Club's pitch so we all went over there to find that the pitch there was already booked too. This was after I had sent numerous text messages and emails confirming all the details.

The GC club then sent out a couple of guys to mark up a large, recently mowed area with cones so that we had somewhere to play. The pitch was probably five metres shorter than a full sized pitch, but they did a good job.
Goals? well we had to make do with corner flags stuck into the ground roughly the right distance apart.

No linesmen, and a ref whose son played in the opposition team, added to our troubles (one of their goals was offside- the whole crowd were up in arms) plus we decided to split the game into thirds owing to the heat. Two thirds of the game we were playing into a force eight gale. Our goalie couldn't even get the ball to the half way line. We only played with the wind for one third, when we scored all our goals, they got all their goals playing with the wind too.

Despite all the problems on the day, we really enjoyed ourselves. The boys were elated to know that they took on the best of the best and matched them, and my assistant coach and I got to see how the lads played under adversity. They played with a lot of spirit and aggression, after going two goals down, fighting back to 2-2, though we never actually went ahead.

Great game, enjoyed the day, plus the couple of beers afterwards.

Thanks, Malc. Keep 'em coming. I enjoy reading about these games. Not sure about the kids having a couple of beers afterwards, though!  :D :D :D :D

Given the circumstances, that was a great result, Malc. When I plied my trade as a cultured number ten, I used to hate playing in high winds---nothing ruins a game more.
Well done.

Go, Bulldogs! Yes, I enjoy these reports also, Malc. Sounds like the kids earned their beers in true Spartan spirit. First defeat? How far into the league season are you, and does that mean the lads are sitting pretty at the top?

Drink can be more of a problem when they get older. I used to play for a local (adult) amateur team on a Saturday afternoon, where we regularly had to delay final team selection until just before kick-off, in order to see if Tam M (name abbreviated) got out of the Nick in time to get to wherever we were playing that day, after 'calming down' from the night before. At home games, it was an anxious wait in the bar of the Dunning Hotel before the game - luckily there was always a little something on hand to calm the nerves. Great times - especially when we, Dunning Heather AFC, took on our great local rivals, Auchterarder Primrose. I kid you not - it was a real man's game back then.

"PERM"? You don't honestly think that curly mess on my head in those days was cultivated! Mind you, I'd gladly swop it for the thin, grey stuff that currently sits there.

I enjoy these football related posts too. We don't have enough of them.

Even though it's the other side of the globe, I feel I want to chant for Malc's lads (like Elgar did for the mighty Wolves).

Bulldoggies, bulldoggies, Oi, Oi, Oi!

"Tam M" is an abbreviated name, Tarks? You mean his surname isn't really "M"?
Nostalgia is not what it used to be. 😟

It's just "Doggies" if you feel the need to chant. Oh, and the boys didn't have beer afterwards, just me!

No, we haven't actually started playing the season's fixtures yet, these are pre-season friendlies.

I only have eleven players, no subs at the moment, but a couple of the lads from the lower div team came and helped us out for the day. We've become an unfashionable club to play for and the good players all flock to Rochedale (not a spelling mistake - that's the name of the local town) first to see if they can make it into their top team. I'm now waiting for phone calls from disaffected parents whose kids didn't get in but who still want to play in the top league.

But it's much more dignified now, Roger, as befits the respected statesman of the cartoon world that you so obviously are now. Much better than the Robertson's jam 'style' you had back then.

Abbreviated from Mitchell, to protect the innocent. Actually, he was usually guilty, come to think of it.
I apologise, in advance.
