I don't like to spend more that $3 - $4 on a cantaloupe and then only if they smell good and are a decent size.
People will come from strange lands to hear me speak my words of wisdom. They will ask me the secret of life and I will tell them. Then maybe I'll finish off with a song. The Nomad

I should have Googled rockmelon!  I did look up the exchange rate for the Australian dollar and was taken aback to see 2 mangoes for more than £6...hope they were very large, Joan.  I make a lot of mango chutney and am always on the lookout for when they're on "special."...how sad is that!!

I thought they were more 'egg' shaped - or am I mixing them up with honeydew melon?

Perhaps spherical, or ovoid?

 ;D

I googled rockmelon - http://fruitcorp.com/f-rockmelon.htm

didn't know about this:  http://www.foodauthority.nsw.gov.au/consumers/keeping-food-safe/special-care-foods/rockmelons/

Will have to tell T as he takes it cut up to sailing - usually has it in an esky of ice, though.

The exchange rate is unbelievable at the moment, Lil - 65p to the Aussie dollar. I don't think I've ever seen it that much before. Makes everything overseas very cheap for us. The Aussie dollar is now worth $1 US - amazing.  As for mangoes, I wouldn't even look at them at that price.  Before Christmas one of the supermarkets was selling them at 3 for $5. The flooding in the north of Queensland is getting worse, which is not good news for fruit and veges, not to mention for the people who live up there.

I love mango chutney, Lil.  Not sad at all that you look for them on special. Very sensible - I'm kicking myself that I didn't buy a tray when they were still cheap.

South Australia and parts of Victoria are expecting temps of 40C today - under major bush fire alert.  Land of major contrasts, isn't it?  We're doing nicely in Sydney - sunny and about 27C at the moment. Hope I'm not speaking too soon!

Have a lovely Hogmanay, everyone!

PS I don't think I ever really listened to the lyrics of the songs I loved in my youth.  Either that or I was totally innocent - I used to sing along, though, obviously never thought about it. I've been listening to Lou Reed for the first time in a long time. He's quite rude, isn't he?

I adore mango chutney and hate the fact that Indian Restaurants provide complimentary onion chutney (which I detest) with popadoms, but charge if you want mango instead!

I speak as one persecuted, nay victimised, by all members of the onion family.

Don't cry about it, though.
