This is your very last chance...

...to engage in delightful dialogue [or deliver a dastardly diatribe] with the mighty Red, at least for the next three weeks [sighs of relief all round, I know].

Yes, there is a carafe of wine out there with my name on it, or at least there will be when I change my name to "Aspro Krasi" and I will be forced to remain languid on a suitably shaded balcony or terrace as the sun sinks slowly in the western sky.

After today the few remaining verbal skills I have can take a break as I traditionally opt for the English speaking solution to foreign languages, namely hand movements and speaking louder and slower.   No doubt the reports of stranded whales on Cretan beaches will increase threefold, and the BBC will report food shortages on Greek Islands, feel free to send a food parcel or two, address it to "Redundant - Crete", I'm sure they will also enjoy the irony.

Weep not dear friends, this is not an end but a beginning [until 5th August, then it'll not be a beginning but an end and I won't be anywhere near the smug git I am right now], there are new chapters soon to be written in the rich tapestry of life, and I for one look forward to reading them as soon as I sober up in the mornings.

Should I succumb in my absence to the Machiavellian machinations of the trolls in the Empire of the Undead [or EU for short], think kindly of me and know that even I, a humble soon to be out of work glorified number cruncher, will have played my part in restoring the cradle of democracy to our bosoms once more.

I leave you with this thought...

Yes, I read your post twice and finally mentally reduced it to:

next three weeks ... shaded balcony ... foreign languages ... beaches ... Crete

At this point, understanding dawned.

Absolutely amazingly apt alliteration, Red.

Let me surmise what Phil was trying say, before he got bogged down in way too much flowery English...

Pished. Back soon. Red.

Don't they have the internet in Crete?  Or is it just a case of that you have found something better to do...

As a kid I lived in Broadstairs, and down there there's a secondary school, colloquially known as "Charlie Dicks", named after a writer, Charles Dickens. My parents both taught there.

Anyway, Charlie Dicks was a writer who had frequented the town, (whilst alive). I think he wrote travel guides, amongst other things, because he wrote a guide to the island to which you're travelling, Red, and what you'd be likely to encounter on a visit there.

Crete Expectation I think it was called.

Did you go to the school that both your parents taught at?

...and repeat.   Back from doing my bit for the Greek economy, and I have to say my wife was clearly on a mission in that regard, half my clothes didn't make it back as a result although at a pinch I could use one or two appropriately designed plaques to cover the essentials.   Sorry to hear about Horace, I have a mental image of the back of Horace, and alas the back of his horse also, riding off into the sunset, possibly with Kitty bound up and draped across a pack mule...

Crete was...Crete, fabulous everything and more funny moments than I could possibly deserve, including a wonderful "war museum" in an old guys house, mostly consisting of Airfix models [mostly war planes but oddly including the Bismark] and a shot of Raki at the end, probably should have started with the Raki.

I'm in Barcelona...wishing I was a Cretin. I have decided Greece now trounces Spain.

The Buttcheeks brigade did a Greek tour once. It consisted of a drive in the hills, some shameless shop outlet promoting, and a visit to a "traditional" Greek homestead. The homestead consisted of a poor wee sun dried local, sitting smoking traditional Benson and Hedges gold, in front of a traditional kitchen with traditional Heinz mayonnaise, looking totally nonplussed as to why circa 60 people had just gate crashed his house. In fairness, there were two gourds outside, so it must have been real.

And there was a goat.

Fun times.
