They say that using more than one smiley face suggests obsequiousness, an excessive eagerness to please.

Who says?  As you are well aware, the use of increasing smileys (or other emoticons), and perhaps the subsequent use of decreasing emoticons has been used many times in the past by many of the illustrious (nay, founding) members of this forum.  :P

Sandy, when you use two exclamation marks instead of a full stop, it suggests you're trying to compensate for the lack of humour in your writing with two huge "Look at me!" exclamation marks, or that you are so unconfident with your humour that you feel the need unsubtly to draw particular attention to it. I think I read that in Fowler's Modern English Usage. Or maybe I just made it up. :)

Mince, may I thank you sir for another life lesson. So often have I wondered whether I am indeed humorous, but in fairness many people point at me and laugh (some even to the point of tears) so I must be funny in some way, shape or form.
I admit I'm using exclamations too much to be healthy. I'm an addict. There, it's out. God, I feel so much better now. Thank you for drawing particular attention to me. Thank you everyone for your support too.

Water, barley, yeast and sugar. I think I read that on a Fowlers Wee Heavy. Or maybe I just made it up.

Tomorrow I may have the strength to deal with my emoticonism.

 ;) ;) ;)

PS. This is still about my smiley from Mr. Kettle, isn't it ?

Many thanks Feather. It's not always been my name, sometimes it's been more of a statement of fact. That, however, is a story for another time.

The Smiley at the end of the sentence is a direct equivalent to the two exclamation marks. To display both, however, is vulgar and should be avoided.

I've just re-read this: Sandy, please do not refer to Mince as 'Sir' - it'll give him delusions of respect from his fellow board members and make him even more dictatorial!

My utmost apologies. I was unaware that in modern English there was a puctuation/emoticon equivalence scale that I had abused. I shall make ammends by inserting a smiley and then deleting it until the natural balance is restored.
